I just hope the Coogs aren't afraid to schedule Mike Rhoades' team. It would be fun to see UH and Rice playing in the new facility.

Quote:Last week the university would neither confirm nor deny the plan to rename the arena after Fertitta, saying it would not reveal the names of donors who "wish to remain anonymous." "Our ethical obligations to our donors are not negotiable," UH spokesman Mike Rosen said in a statement.

Quote:[Fertitta] also took part in negotiations with the Hofheinz family, who filed a lawsuit in May seeking to require the University of Houston to keep the Hofheinz name on the arena. Hofheinz, the former county judge, gave the university $1.5 million to build the basketball arena in 1969.

How about playing them in Tudor. Mike's first team played at "Fill in the Blank" arena.

Care to wager which program leaves D1 athletics first?

As well as the one with an endowment of $790M and an annual budget of $1.71B.

Exactly the reason for you to move to D3 to be with like minded institutions.

And how much of that endowment and budget goes to Athletics?

Um. You might want to read again. Tiki was pointing out how UH's endowment is smaller than its annual budget. He's questioning the financial health of UH in general.

Or more likely their dependence on taxpayer money. Lots and lots of taxpayer money.

Reminds me of the burgeoning bureaucracy that is the HCC system.

RE: New name for Hofheinz Pavilion
UH is in a precarious situation in that the 'face' of education is changing. In 10 years (my guess, could be way off in either direction) the 'value' of most education will be in community colleges and/or online courses for 70% of what takes place at most Universities... with an increasing number of people taking 'core' courses at less expensive places or places like UH having to reduce the cost of many of their core courses. The 'value' will be in that 30%.

The UT and 'State' systems can certainly create 'common' courses that can share that overhead, and places like Rice can still sell the idea that their courses are worth more, especially in that our endowment can still absorb that cost (as we already do anyway) but I'm wondering how places like UH will compete with the UT or A&M or State system schools. I think they end up being absorbed... and then there is no telling what happens. In a perfect world, they become the "UT or A&M' of the 'State' System... but politics will play into that a whole lot.

Exactly...which was exactly why Khator wrote the emails that said UH couldn't continue to fund athletics to the level they have the last several years unless they can get into a P5 conference.

Not really awful if you have been in some of the old SWC gyms, arenas etc.

Heart of Texas for Baylor smelled like the rodeos that had been held there
G. Rollie at A&M was old (1954)
Never been to Gregory Gym (1930) at UT, but the Super Drum puts you further away from the action
Hofheinz was state of the art when it was built in 1970 and much better than the old Jeppensen or Delmar gyms where UH played before

Cut him some slack. Those are big numbers.
