Big 12 expansion within 10 years
Now this is more realistic talk/chatter than it happening immediately.

We asked commissioner Bob Bowlsby to crystal ball the Big 12 in 10 years. Does he anticipate conference expansion by then? Yes.

.......................

Now that is an outlook that I can agree with. No matter if the Big 12 loses conference members they will have the chance to expand. They will have the chance to expand even if they didn't lose members.

Big 12 expansion will eventually happen either way.

I fixed it for Bowlsby.

Sure, after the Big12 loses Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, they will then vote to expand.

Sigh...

There won't be any viable candidates from outside the "Power" conferences in ten years.

So the B12 must be thinking they will poach the ACC... Or they themselves won't be around. I don't see the ACC being that vulernable so it must be the latter.

Why wouldn't there be viable candidates?

Nobody is rushing to add UCONN. The B1G or the ACC could easily add them if they wanted to. They aren't. thus, they will still be around for the Big 12 or the ACC for years to come.

Nobody is rushing to add your Cincinnati. Your school will be a target for the Big 12 for years if not added soon.

Houston isn't being targeted aggressively by any P5 right now.

Colorado State, BYU, Houston, Memphis, UCONN, USF, UCF, New Mexico, SMU, and more will be there for years to go come if nothing goes down right now.

The Pac 12 isn't going to be adding BYU, Nevada, New Mexico or anyone else outside of a P5 right now. The same with the B1G, the ACC and the SEC.

Do you not get the wildly different $$$ trajectories between the "Power" conferences and the non-Power conferences? Right now the degree of difference between any of the "Power" and non-Power teams in terms of coaching, facilities, etc... is fairly small.

In ten years, we will be in a totally different division...or might as well be. In ten years, calling up a non-power team will be like calling up an FCS program right now. (And actually I think it WILL be calling up an FCS program...) Not to mention the pool of football playing candidates will be substantially smaller.

At the end of the next 10 years. Arkansas, Oklahoma, Okie state, Texas, and Texas A&M will work toward forming a new conference. This will happen because the NCAA will again change the rules on having a conference championship game and allow conferences with 8 members to host one.

Possible Big 12 vote on expansion later this month at the Big 12 BODs. They could go to 14.

why would current Big 12 members want to give up $4 million per year over 8 years or $32 million per team total to do this?

and if they decided to "keep the same payout" for existing members over that 8 years why would they want to have 4 members of the conference that make $14 million dollars per year less per year on average over 8 years in the conference especially when new media contracts come up in 8 years

This from the guy who is "confident" that Texas will end up in the Big Ten....

Whatever. If you think that Houston, SMU, New Mexico, et all, will be competitive in ten years after receiving a pittance of what the other B12 members will receive (a deficit of some $260 MILLION over that decade ($30 M (for the B12)- $4 M (for the AAC) X 10) then we will just have to disagree. The "g" schools are living in a completely different world than even the lowest of the "Power" schools.

When I public statements from Texas that they are in favor of expansion with G5 candidates or BYU then I will believe there is a chance of something happening. Until then the only favorable vote for Big12 expansion will be with current P5 programs and that’s not happening for quite a few years.

Bowlsby can make all the public statements he wants but everyone knows Texas holds the cards when it comes to expansion. They have already stated publically that in their minds no G5 program moves the needle for them.

If it’s a yes vote it will be to expand to 12 or 14 and the candidate pool will consist of programs currently in the P5 conferences, so in essence nothing will actually happen for quite some time.

Big 12 expansion is dead for now.
