Should employers follow their employees social media?
And should your employer be able to take action against what they find?

IMO it depends on the employer and what you post. We started advising people that they could be held responsible for what they posted, especially if it were job related, but the only time I am aware of anybody actually taking the effort to look at something was when it was reported. Of course we dealt with some confidential stuff like medical records, etc. so it's a little different than the clerk at Walmart.

the premise is why I introduced my daughter to this board as mandatory reading AFTER she deleted her accts on her own years ago....

I view it not from "should".....I view it as being unstoppable....

So that is interesting to me. It was people "reporting" things they found offensive in your example. I wonder when employees will have to submit their Twitter, Instagram, user names and message boards they post on to their employers? I guess the upper management would have to do the same as well?

Would there ever be a time when the normal person can see what the workers at the local fast food are doing on social media?

Should we have a right to know that? Would it impact when and where people do business?

Yes. If you would be ashamed of what you post if your momma or your daughter saw it then don't post it. If you do that you've got nothing to worry about.

We had a PM working in Afghanistan and I busted his azz for timesheet fraud because he was in Ethiopia with his girlfriend posting pics on FB while getting paid for working in a danger zone.

RE: Should employers follow their employees social media?
Rule number one should be to never have a facebook account. I don't know if it will cost this deputy his job but I imagine the sheriff will have him on a short leash for a while.

Quote:According to the Sampson County Sheriff's Office, deputies discovered several groups fighting at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday at the Lakewood Country Club and attempted to break up the fights. One deputy received minor injuries when his arm was cut with broken glass during the fight, and a deputy's vehicle was struck by people trying to leave the scene.

Three people were shot, one person was stabbed and two people were beaten during the fights. The victims were transported to Sampson Regional Medical Center and Cape Fear Valley Hospital with severe injuries.

In a Facebook post about the incident, one person commented “they won’t be getting their deposit back” to which Deputy Patrick Foreman replied, “It don’t matter, it was paid for on EBT.”

EBT stands for electronic benefit transfer and is used to issue food stamps.

Capt. Eric Pope with the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office said the department takes the comment seriously and has launched an internal investigation.

“The Sampson County Sheriff’s Office does not condone the comment or that type of behavior,” Pope said.

Anyone who uses social media and posts something they do not want their employers, or prospective employers, knowing is an idiot.

Social media has its benefits, but it is like fly paper for idiots and the deranged.

RE: Should employers follow their employees social media?
You're going to end up where the employer gets to control what you eat...how you exercise....what you can and cannot say to your friends electronically....what you wear in your off hours.....and on and on.

That's probably not a good idea. As a free people you probably want to collectively try to limit that.

Or probably not. Things will be fine if you haven't done anything that the corporate drone outside your window shouldn't see.

it's a horrible idea....it promotes more brainwashing and doesn't promote thought...

it's my number one pet peeve over the course of time....it's why so many had to shut their mouths and were imprisoned or burned over time....

I wonder if employers have ever quantified how much business they lose if one of their employees offends a customer on social media just by post something? I wonder how many customers of different businesses check the social media of places they may purchase something from?

that's a interesting tangent......I would say none.....

what I would say is that it's a 'vp protecction mechanism' that matters due to them becoming a vp....hence, the Peter Principle.....

but that's just my silly nutz....

When I would serve on interview panels I would search Facebook and Twitter for accounts for the people we were interviewing. I've negatively rated several interviewees based solely upon the pictures and posts they have had on social media. When you want a career in a field where you are in a position of trust you are held to a higher standard than the fry guy at Wendy's. We had some basic guidelines.....don't share personal information, don't share pictures of victims, and don't post anything that put the department in a bad light.

We never fired anyone based upon what they posted but there's been a few, including at least two who worked in administration, who got called into the big office for an explanation. Our EMS division and Sheriff's Dept has fired people for posts both related to work and not.

Personally I never spied on my guys and if I saw something that I thought was questionable I would give them a call first. The only times I would officially look at social media was when I was participating in the interview process. I have negatively rated interviewees for what they had posted on social media before, and if I am ever in a position where I am involved in the hiring process again I'll do it again.

RE: Should employers follow their employees social media?
I was looking at this subject from a consumers point of view as well.
Big can of worms. Should I, as a consumer, have the right to know social media content about the person cooking my burger/cutting my lawn/nailing my shingles and ringing me up at the counter?
Do I have a right to make a purchasing decision based on that info ?
