T&F: Four Current Bearcats, One Former Set for Olympic Trials
Quote:T&F: Four Current Bearcats, One Former Set for Olympic Trials
June 30, 2016

CINCINNATI - Five athletes with ties to the University of Cincinnati track and field program are set to compete for a spot on Team USA as they travel to Eugene, Ore., for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, July 1-10. The event for the “world’s toughest team to make” will see athletes compete at Historic Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus in hopes of finishing among the Top 3 in their respective events and earn a berth into the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The five athletes heading to compete marks one of the largest groups for the program in recent years. In 2012, three Bearcats competed, including Mary Wineberg, David Payne and Terrence Somerville. Wineberg (gold, 4x400m relay) and Payne (silver, 110m hurdles) were both coming off the success of the 2008 Games where both earned medals for the U.S. In 2008, four with ties to the program competed, including Payne (third) and Wineberg (second) in the 110m hurdles and 400m dash, respectively, along with Ashley Wilhelm (heptathlon) and Renee Hein (high jump).

This year, along with Payne (110m hurdles), four athletes that were on the 2016 roster are also set to compete. The current Bearcats include Loretta Blaut and Erika Hurd in the women’s high jump, Kenya Woodall in the women’s 200m and 400m dashes and Macklin Tudor in the men’s discus. All four competed for UC during the indoor season with all but Tudor competing outdoors for the Bearcats (redshirted).

Blaut and Hurd both earned All-America honors twice during the 2016 season with each earning one USTFCCCA All-America First Team and one USTFCCCA All-America Second Team honor. Hurd recently concluded her collegiate career placing ninth at the NCAA Championships at the same venue hosting the trials to become the most decorated woman in program history (four All-America honors). Blaut is coming off a sixth-place showing at the outdoor national meet, which was held at the same venue she will jump this weekend.

Woodall has qualified for a pair of events as she will first compete in the 400m dash before taking on the field in the 200m dash later in the trials. Woodall also recently finished her collegiate career as she placed 12th overall at the NCAA Championships in the 400m dash in Eugene to collect her first All-America accolade. The school record holder in six individual events, Woodall’s times of 51.78 (400m) and 23.09 (200m) run this year have already met the Olympic standard meaning a Top 3 overall finish in either event in Oregon will send her to Rio.

Tudor is coming off a season that saw him compete indoors for UC before taking a redshirt season outdoors. Indoors, he finished second at the American Athletic Conference Championships in the shot put and set a school record in the process. Outdoors, he competed unattached from the team and focused his attention on the discus. In a meet in La Jolla, Calif., Tudor recorded a personal-best toss of 62.50m, which bettered the automatic qualifying standard of 62.00m to punch his ticket to Eugene.

Although not in attendance as a competitor, another former Bearcat will be on the infield for the Trials as former All-American Lewis Johnson will once again be part of the broadcast crew with NBC. Johnson, the school record holder in the 800m run, has covered track and field and other events for NBC since joining the company in 1999.

Stream.NBCOlympics.com will carry all of the action live from Oregon each day of the competition. NBC and NBC Sports Network will also broadcast live to televisions throughout the meet.
