There is too much going on in the world with the economy for large entities like the Big 10 and SEC, let alone networks to rush into expensive long term agreements. For the time being I think the situation actually favors the SEC. How? Through signing a long range deal on the SECN we are fairly secure for quite some time. Odds are right now that the rights won't be worth as much in 6 years. At least in 2024 when the CBS deal is up we are talking about a total that may remain static or get a slight bump up. I wouldn't want to be renegotiating a complete package in 6 years like the Big 12, Big 10, and two years later the ACC.

If an Oklahoma sought a home I think we might be amenable to the overtures. But right now I don't see us pursuing any further additions unless they are absolutely home runs, and even then we would have to have network assurances. So I think realignment will be a major back burner issue until the bigger picture is resolved.

I believe uncertainty in the world is forever now. I think you are correct Jr. No long term deals which could backfire with a changing world.

RE: Where I think we stand now with regards to realignment.
Here's my hesitation in accepting what you're saying JR.

While much of it makes sense, I can't think of a reason why the networks would give the B1G a significant raise now if they don't think the money will be there in the future.

Why the B1G would take a short term deal? I get it.

Why the SEC might be in great position with a long term deal? I get it.

Why the networks would bother giving anyone a raise now if they don't think the market will support the same amount of money or more in the next round of negotiations? I don't get it. They're shooting themselves in the foot and spending money they don't have to spend. They are also increasing expectations for another raise in 6 years. What do they gain by doing that?

Either the market for live sports is stronger than is being suggested or the executives at the major networks haven't figured out that a major economic downturn could be coming. I suppose either is possible, but I can't think of another explanation.

Let me offer this, while the Brexit has disrupted the markets for the time being and the markets hate uncertainty more than anything else, I think Britain will come out of this stronger economically because they will have the freedom to back away from certain debilitating socialist policies. Combine that with the increased trade the US will probably have with the UK and our economy could actually be bumped up depending on what policies are implemented by the next administration.

If the EU more or less dissolves then the dollar will be stronger than it has in a very long time. If nothing else, that could give us long term relief on oil prices. I'm not saying our economy is going to take off or anything, but this period of instability may not last that long. We haven't really recovered from our most recent recession yet, but perhaps we will get back to respectable growth in the not too distant future.

Will bring behind the B1G financially lead to a competitive disadvantage in the SEC? Obviously not, especially when the CBS package becomes available again. While I'm sure SEC fans would pay a premium for an independent conference network, affiliating with ESPN ensures the fans still get wide distribution for reasonable price. That type of brand building is more valuable than what the B1G did by adding UMD and Rutgers to increase revenue.
