I had a sergeant in Germany who was married to a German woman. He told me time and again we weren't there to stop the Russians from advancing, we were there to keep the Germans from starting another World War.

Both were the goals of NATO with the third point of keeping the US in Europe.

I think this sergeant was mostly referring to his wife when it came to starting another world war.
