In some cases, the only distinguishing characteristic is their climate, such as Phoenix. Miami has a certain vibe and culture to it as well as Vegas but they have no deep history and roots (there are people alive older than Vegas).
In another few decades, Miami could well be the Venice of the United States.

Of course, by that time Venice might be even more entirely under the sea.

That part of Florida is already experiencing problems with sea level rise and fresh water problems. You may very well be right.

Only a small percent of American cities are over 200 years old and a significant amount of those places were not actually notable places in that time. Just fathom this, 121 years ago, Miami and Las Vegas didn't exist and Atlanta was just beginning to fully recover from being burned to the ground. 150 years ago, Chicago was a sleepy railroad terminus.

I'll give you one better..I often play word games on Sporcle to pass time between phone calls. Anyway there was one where you had to name the most populated cities in 1960. Several cities that are among the top 25-30 metro areas now, where not even in the top 100.

If I'm not mistaken, while the city was formally incorporated almost a century later, it was established as a fort in the 1820s. Maybe it was called something different back then, either way I've led this thread off the point a little too much so there's not much use discussing that from here. If that's the case, it just solidifies that we came first even if they're obviously a lot more prominent now.

Fort Dallas IINM (Googling is too easy, I'll try to recall off my memory). That said, your point was about Miami's name, which isn't relevant until Miami was called Miami (in either case).

But the rich character that you love about those cities is basically been preserved as an amusement park. They are surrounded by the souled suburbs and business districts that form the heart of most US cities.

Perhaps so but at least they have areas that are ancient and that you can read about before visiting. Of course it's not gonna all be ancient: war destruction, urban decay and even modern sprawl changed the landscape. But the only thing American cities have is natural features, otherwise they're just modern eyesores with tall glass skyscrapers, ringed by freeways, McMansions, strip malls and fast food restaurants.

Please add "(FL)" or "of Florida" to the title of the post so as to not be confused with the real Miami. The Miami that was founded 116 years before U of Coral Gables copied us.

Thank You.
Agreed, courtesy the U. 04-cheers

I didn't go to Miami, but there are lots of college football fans that know about the original Miami. Sorry you don't. For a school that no one has ever heard of, see Georgia State.

This.

Aside for a few self imposed sanctions that won't mean much in the grand scheme of things, the NCAA won't do squat to a power conference school. In the past few years this has been proven on many occasions.

Not much use for knowing about DeKalb either unless you like cornfields. :-)

Edit: Well, Cindy Crawford is from there so that's something.
