16 schools that can compete in a P5 conference
http://campusinsiders.com/news/group-of-...06-17-2016

"16. Georgia Southern
After making the transition from FCS to FBS look easy, the Eagles just might have an affinity for rising through the ranks.

In two seasons as a member of college football’s highest division, Georgia Southern has won 18 games, while going 14-2 in league play. Yeah, that league is the Sun Belt Conference, but it’s hard not to be impressed by how quickly this program has adapted to an uptick in competition. In 2015, the Eagles annihilated Bowling Green for their first-ever bowl win and fell by just six points to in-state heavyweight Georgia in Athens. Now comes the tricky part: continuing the build without influential head coach Willie Fritz."

No I don't think we are ready for a P5 conference but I'll take the press any day!

Hail Southern!

Nah that can't be correct because the most talented team in the G5 isn't even listed.

On a serious note to me a top 16 list of programs who possibly could go to a p5 one day are:

1. Houston
2. Cincinnati
3. UConn
4. BYU
5. UCF
6. Memphis
7. Colorado St
8. New Mexico
9. San Diego St
10. USF
11. Temple
12. ECU
13. Boise St
14. Navy
15. Air Force
16. SMU

And only 2 -4 of these will ever make it (maybe)

That list looks pretty exhaustive. I can't really think of any other school that would have a legitimate shot in the halfway-near future.

BYU has to be at the top of every list like that.
Their situation is as close to Notre Dame's as you can get.

Not every year, but long term, they can compete with the P5's.

BYU should be a no brainier but the PAC 12 has already passed them over in favor of Utah and the Big 12 seems to be looking east for now. I don't believe the Big 10, SEC or ACC would look that far west so if the PAC 12/ Big 12 don't take them BYU will never get in.

During the past 10 seasons, Toledo has beaten Kansas, Iowa State, Purdue, Michigan, Colorado, Arkansas. The Rockets lost nail biters 22-27@Ohio State and 17-24@Arizona.

I don't pay as much attention to this stuff as some folks on here.
But didn't the PAC12/BYU thing fall apart because BYU refused to share the money they get from their own Longhorn Network style property?

Being the flagship Mormon college means they will never worry for money, but they really will have to get into the PAC 12 if they ever want to compete for the NC again.
They don't get to play that pseudo Big10 schedule that Notre Dame gets.

Notably missing: any C-USA schools.

I don't consider BYU a G5, they are independent, so they don't count.

Can't believe a Southern fan took his own team out of the list. Which way is the wood shed? Somebody needs to be taken out behind it.

At a glance he traded GS,Toledo & UNI for Temple, Colorado State and New Mexico, SMU? I now I'm missing a substitute, but I really don't get a couple of these. CSU and NM? There just isn't that much up potential imop. I'll take the first 3 against the other four in my conference any time.

I get SMU, if you go back to the day when they were a Power conference member. But I'm not sure they will every get back there.

Marshall is on that list....I think SMU would have TCU's spot in Big 12 had they not gotten the death penalty which set that so far back

Being able to compete in a P5 conference is not the same as being able to get an invitation from one.

Colorado State is building a beautiful new stadium in the heart of their campus...great school, great town...I could see them in the Big 10 or Big 12 one day.

Same with UCF...other than their stadium being a giant Erector Set.

There are ONLY two spots that MAY some day open up in the P5. Those will be in the Big 12, but ONLY if the Big 12 decides to expand. There is absolutely no reason to believe that they will. The Big 12 would gain absolutely nothing by adding any of the schools on the lists in this thread. In time, those schools listed will accept reality and get comfortable. They're not going anywhere.

only BYU and Houston bring anything to the b12..unless they could poach a clemson or fla. state in the east. there was a ripple or two about those two schools being open to realignment recently but that may have passed. since wva is such an outlier in the b12 I could see them leaving and someone farther west stepping into their slot. that add has not made much sense to me.

RE: 16 schools that can compete in a P5 conference
There may be a time in the future where it's makes financial sense to add more teams, so the P5's could go looking again. With media changing as quickly as it does there is no telling what the college football landscape will look like 10-15 years from now. So I think a lot of these schools could be viable options in the future.
