Where were the home stadium scenes from We Are Marshall filmed?

BTW, it's a great film. Thanks.

Herndon Stadium in Atlanta. The old Marshall stadium (used until 1990) had already been demolished.

One of my favorite scenes is the opening where it pans over the Ohio River and then through the city on its way to the stadium

I got such intense chills during that opening fly-over shot of Huntington.

RE: Marshall fans...
It was fun watching them film, had never been on a movie set before. I had a 2nd story office two doors down from the Keith Albee Theater where the players are coming out of the movie the night of the crash and the fire trucks are rolling by. They shot that seen about 10 times and I was thinking, man how freakin monotonous is it making a movie? People walking down the street, cars going by, 30 seconds of movie time, then move everything back, which takes 20 minutes, and shoot it again.

Our PD was working security for the residential scenes which were shot on Barger Hill in Kenova... I met MMc, M Fox, and January Jones... Spoke to each for a short time. Really cool people.

RE: Marshall fans...
My wife's aunt is in the scene where they are talking about shutting down the program and he points out the window at the student below and they chant WE ARE MARSHALL. My girlfriend (now wife) and I were going to be extras too but the days we went one day they already had enough the next I was too large LOL and they didn't need any more women that day so my wife was out They wanted me to come back for a football scene but I couldn't come that day I don't remember why. I wish I could have because a bunch of them were able to not only be in those scenes but go down to ATL too. It was an awesome time.

Couple times in the movie you can see thing that would t have been there in 1970/71 like Joan C Edwards Stadium in the background in the scene where they are up on top of a dorm balcony talk on about why he doesn't want to play. You can see The Joan in the far background. It's fuzzy but you can see the lights.

Some of the characters were "composite", not based on any one real person and Jack Lengyal wasn't quirky as portrayed. The big embellishment is that the "We are" chant didn't exist at that time, but you have to work it in with the movie named and what they were trying to convey.

Interesting. That makes for a better story line so I get why they did it but had no idea

I've always heard there was, but wasn't alive at the time.

There were a few people who wanted to drop football, as there are a few people today who would like to drop football. There was no serious move to drop the sport at the time. I guess most people think the movie is a factual account, but it is mostly fiction.

Marshall had already started the expansion and renovation of Fairfield Stadium.
