No. The University of Akron becomes an honorary Lebron James.

Mr. James ought to donate some of his millions to Akron, his hometown, and let them build a new basketball arena on campus to be named after him.

It would be nice if the Zips have some kind of event with James in connection with say an early season home football game.

Or even better, if the Zips' schedule meshes with the Cavs, then have him honored at half-time of a home Zips basketball game...

It's only a matter of time, since he just paid for the college of education building to get a massive renovation.

You can't pick on LeBron James for not giving back to Akron - he's sponsoring a lot of kids (2,300 is the number I saw) in the Akron school systems, and has promised to pay 4 years of tuition for each if they can get accepted at Acorn. For all the 'I did it for Cleveland' stories, his charity goes to the Akron area.

What LeBron is doing for the kids is great, but the University is actually the ones flipping the bill for tuition on those kids. LeBron contribution is that he is allowing the University to use his name for marketing and he agrees to participate in commercials at no charge.

Since pretty much all the kids are from poverty stricken families, a good chunk of the money will come from state and federal grant money, meanwhile, Akron will cover the remaining amount from the general fund.

Like the idea of having a ceremony for him at a Zips football game. Akron needs to get on planning that.

Sure and do a 'meet and greet' with the fans, sign autographs, etc.

Give away things like autographed memorabilia, etc. Something fans will treasure.

Being a Cleveland-area resident...did I really hear that LeBron said 'this is all for Cleveland?' Do we get to split up the money he earned for the Championship? Is that for us too? Or are we just allowed to see the trophy from a distance?

RE: O/T Congrats to CLE
But here's the one thing I got to say about game 7 -

We got the two best basketball teams in the world, the some of the best players, at crunch time, the some of the most important minutes of their careers, two of the best coaches, the time when we should be seeing awesome basketball ...

... and over the last 4:38 they combine to go 1-17 from the field????? Yeah, you can tell me it was great defense, but where's the coach saying, "we got 3 minutes, we're tied, get into our set offense, our best can beat their best, don't play out-of-control..."

Were they playing the EMU zone on defense? Lol.

The (winning, w/Lebron) Cavs' annual economic impact to the Cleveland area has been estimated in the mid 9-figures so he is essentially distributing many times his own salary to NEO. He could do that anywhere else he wanted to but he chose to come back and do it for CLE, at least for a couple more years. And hopefully the trophy will be displayed in Akron so you can see it up close and personal.

From what I understand, the Cavs generate around $200 million in annual revenue. My guess is that the vast majority of this revenue is from fans in the Cleveland area who would spend it on other local entertainment options if the Cavs relocated.

Coming from a Cleveland area fan that has made the journey quite a few times to downtown Cleveland, I can tell you that I've gone way over budget on what I normally allocate myself for "entertainment". If I wasn't spending this money on the local economy, I would be using it to pay down on student loans or let it build in my savings account.

I'm a pretty frugal person, but am willing to pay the price to witness history. I can't imagine that I'm the only one.

RE: O/T Congrats to CLE
Have any of you been to Downtown Cleveland lately?

Downtown Cleveland is booming. While the Greater Cleveland area has shrunk massively in population over the last two decades (and beyond), the last decade for Downtown Cleveland has been incredible. Not sure what the population is up to now, I think it is like 15k immediately in Downtown and that doesn't count the neighborhoods immediately around Downtown (trendy neighborhoods like Tremont and Ohio City or University Circle)
More than anywhere, this renaissance is evident in the area immediately surrounding Quicken Loans Arena.

Do yourself a favor... Go to the MAC Tournament next year. You WILL enjoy yourself. I promise. Take the RTA (light rail) or drive into Downtown and park at Tower City. Walk from Tower City (aka Cleveland's 2nd tallest building and MAC HQ) exit the building onto Public Square (which is currently undergoing multi-million renovation) and walk east down Euclid Avenue. You will hit E Fourth Street, pedestrian only street lined with restaurants. Take that, you will come out a block up with view of Quicken Loans Arena.

Lebron James and Dan Gilbert have both received massive criticism. Beyond my biased Cleveland sports' fan view on them, I will always have respect that runs much deeper than sports for what they've helped to do for Cleveland and Northeastern Ohio.
