Oh wait, those are called bonds, and they are going to pay for it on the backs of students with incredible tuition increases over the next 30 years.

Even when they do something right by UAB, they sound paternalistic. Notice that the BOT says "You" and not "We". With the BOT, I would suggest holding off the full celebration until our football team is actually practicing there.

Agree. He shouldn't have gotten a cheer at that. Unfortunately it seems that everyone is just going to accept a half-measure and we're going to be mired in mediocrity and still unable to make decisions for ourselves.

Fire Ray Watts.

So we should do what exactly? Turn it down? Protest the vote? Or maybe we should build off the momentum so in a few years we are back at the table asking for more. I didnt like the comment either, but I'm not sure it was meant as it is characterized to be at this point. I thought he was trying to get some excitement from the UAB crowd for a change.

I think a pretty solid thing to do would simply have been to not clap and cheer like trained monkeys. No, there shouldn't have been a protest today, or even a boo. But, I'm not going to beg for the permission to spend my own money and act like I'm so grateful and indebted to them that they are being so generous with my money. They act like they're being so magnanimous to allow us to do as we see fit with our own f'n money, I'd be shocked if Jim Wilson had given ten cents to UAB Athletics.

Everyone acts like we've won and there's no need to hold anyone accountable or that the same jerkoffs that started this entire thing in the first place aren't still in power.

Fire Ray Watts.

Agreed... They act like they were stepping out on a limb...

Trading this facility for quiet acceptance of the Scott Phelps appointment was a deal with the devils. The alternative was civil war, which would only benefit the Bryant Cabal.

Brother mixd is correct. Jim Wilson III and the rest of the corrupt III's and IV's did not suddenly become our friends. Our work is not done.

This is the point I was trying, but evidently failed, to make last week with the Ingram letter. He didn't seem to share the vision...I'm not asking him to take away the credit from those who have actually made it happen, but I want to know that those whose job it is to drive this thing are actually excited about where we are going.

We may be getting a new facility, but it feels like we are also falling back into the mindset that got us here in the first place. I know we expanded the scope of the project, but we went with money in hand. That's an absurd way to run and grow the program, and it won't work long term. Let's not get hung up on the next step in our growth for another 20 years.

I'll never again be content with what they "allow" us to have. We deserve what we want!

That & even further expansion of enrollment with mostly out of state students.

I think most on here realize that. What we have right now though is something that Coach Clark & company can use to get the program to the top of the conference & in the eye sight of other potential conference moves.

Until the UA Board of Trustees stop using "You" for UaB and UaH while using "We" for UaT and start action like the UA System Board of Trustees and use "We" for all three campuses of the UA System, the war is not over. Battles are being won but we don't have Self Governance at UaB yet. We have Administration and upper management loaded with UaT expatriates and loyalists. We have to have UaB Alumni, faculty and loyalists in the majority for all committees and bodies making decisions new administration and leadership hires as well as about UaB's future. The UA(S) BoT should only review and verify proposals from UaB to assure they meet financial requirements and are reasonable for the mission UaB has in the region. #UaBSelfGovernance (aka #FreeUaB) #RTR (Retire Today Ray)

This, 100%. This is the biggest thing in my mind, and you'd think that with all the money paid to PR consultants by both UAB and the System office, someone would have brought it up. Jim Wilson might have been trying to be genuinely nice or funny or whatever, but all of that was out the window when he used "you". They always treat UAB as separate, which it is separate from UA, but UAB is supposed to be equal to UA at that level of governance. They are supposed to be advocates for UAB just as much as they are advocates for UA. They are supposed to be part of the UAB "family" as much as they are for UA. I'm not saying they have to give as much money to UAB football or attend every UAB football game, I honestly don't care. But if they can't even put in the slightest, tiniest effort to at least on the surface eliminate the "us vs. them" outsider crap, then they can all kiss the fattest part of my ass.

RE: From BOT Meeting
You are right; UAB, UAH and UAT are thought of as separate and yet not equal. Until the composition of the BOT is changed, this bias will be present every time anything goes to them for approval. I feel that they will never think of each campus as 3 parts of a whole; they still see UAB and UAH as expansion centers and UAT as the real school. I would be overjoyed if the looked at UAB as an equal part of their little club. Until attitudes towards UAB and UAH change, it will always be "us versus them". Because of this, we must always remain on guard and keep a sharp lookout.

My attitude towards them will need to change as well. I see UAT as a leech that we are forced to feed and yet it gets to control what and when we get to eat. UAT acts the way it does due to one simple fact: without UAB as a source of funding, it would have a hard time stay open. They never do anything to try to change my opinion of them (I am convinced they do not care about my opinion of them). I am willing to give them a fair chance but, until I see a more equitable treatment of UAB and UAH from the BOT, my attitude towards them will not change.

They said the goal was to be in the facility by beginning of the season 2017. I bet they're going to hit the gas from this point until then. It'll be crazy busy

The construction on the softball stadium is going to have to move fast as well if it's going to be ready for their 2017 season in February.

One question on the pavilion:

Will it have some sort of pseudo walls like garage doors than can be rolled down when there's something more substantial than just a light rain? Or even rolled up tarps at the top of each opening that can be let down in bad weather?

The pavilion is a great step, but I'm curious how it's supposed to help if its super windy, rain blowing sideways, 30 degrees outside, etc.

football is not always played in perfect weather. we may be playing a critical game in 30 degree weather or the rain
