RE: 2018 Basketball Recruiting
BTW, our schedule has been pretty good overall. Nonconference has been better than any other CAA team on average the last 5-6 years. But, I would still love to see us play in a holiday tourney and also for the other CAA schools to step up the nonconference scheduling. UNCW has a much better schedule this year(at least of what we know so far).

Are we done or are we going after another big via graduate transfer?

RE: 2018 Basketball Recruiting
I remember attending a William and Mary vs Pitt game back in 2004. Some Pitt fan saw my W&M gear and said “I know you guys are from the South and all, but blacks are allowed to play D-I basketball now” He also called us the “White Man Express”. This guy was a drunk tool, but he had a point. Never thought I would see the day that W&M would actually have THREE African American recruits in the same year, let alone have five total on the roster with Jihar and Nate. When people say we look unathletic, it is often code for “that team is a bunch of white dudes”. This sort of thing is stereotypical and ignorant, but sometimes in a recruit’s eyes perception is reality. Think Marcus and Daniel making it in the D-League has helped our cause immensely! Thrilled to get a Cali kid like Mehkel into our program...the coaches deserve all the credit in the world for pulling off our very own Fab Five plus one (Andy). This year should be fun, but ‘19-‘20 should be off the hook!

Harvey retweeted his AAU coach about the commitment.

RE: 2018 Basketball Recruiting
Often a lot of kids initiate following the coaching staff to try to get on their radar. Usually of no consequence, but a 6'9" 205 unsigned senior out of Mass., Kevin Kone, started following Austin and Jonathan, and would be an intriguing prospect to potentially bring in and redshirt. He's picking up attention, and JMU, among others, started following him.

Yeah, he could use the year to get stronger and work on that foul line jumper, then become a valuable part of the next class.

If the development potential is there, it sure makes the recruitment sledding easier if the player has pursued you first. He's getting late exposure with current AAU play. Besides, he's from ground zero of Naismith town.

RE: 2018 Basketball Recruiting
Two unrelated and unimportant comments regarding the Mehkel commitment:

1) The Daily Press was very quick to report it. I actually saw it there before I saw it on this board. (I was taking a self-imposed sabbatical from here because trying to follow a 17 year old on a recruiting trip seemed like stalking and I was checking the board every couple of hours.) Seems strange they would use a reporter (Dave Johnson) to report on a commitment when we haven't officially announced anything yet.
2) Several posters have beated me to this point but I seem to recall back in the CAAZONE days, before I joined, there was one poster who insisted we had a quota system and that significant donor money would be withdrawn if we ever exceeded that quota. I thought those comments were despicable and (1) am glad we have finally proven how false that it and (2) wonder if anyone recalls that poster and if he/she is stlill active.

Dave Johnson always stays in twitter range for any tidewater recruitment news, and relayed his reporting from seeing the original AAU team post about Harvey's commitment. Tony and staff can't officially comment until they have the signed NLI in hand, which they may not have yet.

Thanks for the confirmation, Tribal. I wouldn't know if he is active or not because I've had him on ignore for years.

TRIBAL is full of everybody knows what, as usual. I have always advocated that W&M recruit more Black players and have often stated that we will never be able to compete in our league unless we do so. I never said nor do I believe that a wealthy donor had established any kind of a quota system to limit the number of black players. I have often pointed out that 80% of the players in the NBA and 80% of the players in Division I college basketball are black and that probably Black players had more "athleticism" than white players.

Nobody is more delighted than I am to see this years recruiting class!

I rest my case. Too easy.

A "You ordered the code red, Colonel" moment if I've ever seen it.

I sure will feel relieved when Tribe Athletics finally announces that Harvey has signed his NLI. Doesn't the late signing period end this week?

Yeah, I've wondered about that, but who knows, maybe they've still had 2018 anvils in the fire and are waiting to announce Harvey when they've fully closed up shop on the final signing day, in the event there is one more late signing.

If that is the case, they should have a greater concern for those of us who live with a heightened sense of paranoia. Just kidding!!
