RE: ODU Football pics from the 30's & 40's
Or does anybody have any reference material to work from?
Don't remember who said it. But somebody mentioned that former football players were honored at an ODU event or something and they wore there Green and Gold jerseys?

Is that correct?
anyone have any pictures from that event?
When it was?
What was it?

Was it the kickoff event in 2006?

Pretty cool. Thanks for sharing. Green and gold would make sense being the Norfolk division of W&M

Yeah, I found a cheat program so I wouldn't have to use photoshop for something like this. However I don't know how exactly the colors were laid out.

Not a big deal, just looking for a distraction from homework. Actually enjoying going through the old records.

It's really cool to see pictures of Foreman Field back in the day. While I can't wait for the new stadium and have been wanting a new stadium for years, it will be cool to say that I got to see games there

What I learned from the photos is that we draw a much larger crowd now. I pray we never see SB Stadium so empty during a game. 02-13-banana

Reading it, it says that football was unrecognized. Think about what was going on during that time frame. It was the Great Depression Era. Also consider that the population in Norfolk / Hampton Roads was much smaller than it is today. Hell just 20 years earlier Colonial Place was a pig farm if I remember correctly.

I'm getting a kick out of looking at all this old stuff.

My old tenant had books with the history of the area. It was great to go through them and learn much about the area.

GhentFan, those are some great old photos. I didn't catch in which library you are finding these, but the Slover on Plume St. downtown has excellent archives. Also, I will recommend "Carroll Walker's Norfolk" as a wonderful resource for old images of the city.

Sweet! Thank you.
My old Tenant used to be a historian for the surrounding areas. She would dig up information for signs, help submit info for historic sites etc... Used to go over and have dinner with them from time to time. Talk about some great conversation.

If I find more pictures of the team I'll post them here.

I sort of like that old style uniform.

RE: ODU Football pics from the 30's & 40's
I did a presentation on the original football team back in like 2001 or so. It was when the BOV was looking at bringing football back and was doing some research on the pros and cons. I spent hours looking through slides in the library at articles about the old team.

Interesting and little known fact: ODU once mistakenly received an invitation to play Miami who was ranked #2 in the country at the time. The invite was supposed to go to W&M, but came to us instead. We accepted the invite and played Miami...winning on their home field. The program was disbanded two years later, I believe.

I vaguely Remer ed that, so I looked it up again. It was in Oct. of 1932, and the Monarchs lost 6-2. Haha, football was played very differently at that point.

RE: ODU Football pics from the 30's & 40's
If anyone is interested, there is a book titled, "The Legacy Renewed, Football and Foreman Field: Norfolk Division - Old Dominion University" which pretty much details the history of ODU football and Foreman Field. The book was written by Peter C. Stewart in collaboration with Thomas R. Garrett. Some here may have known Tom Garrett (I did) and also know that he posted here as "Monarch History". Sadly, Tom passed away a few years ago.

Tom was a wealth of knowledge specifically about ODU basketball and football. He also collaborated on a book about the history of ODU basketball and at one time both books were available at the ODU bookstore and on Amazon. Highly recommended reading.

Agreed. Got both books when buying my own birthday present. Great photos and stories.

I second the Slover library. They've got a fantastic local history section on the 2nd floor of the older side of the building. A ton of fantastic old maps and pictures are in there to look at.
