Looks like Cincinnati Gardens will not be the home of UC Basketball next year.

Wow, that would be great for the county and Bond Hill- not to mention for the people searching for these types of jobs. My employer built a new facility in Bond Hill which opened its doors bin April. We have somewhere in the vicinity of 1,200-1,500 people working here.

I know it is off topic, but why does a city like Cincinnati have a "Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority"?

I know Cincinnati is on a river, but it is not a port. And even if it was a port ,the area around the Cincinnati Gardens would not be part of it.

The sections of Ohio Revised Code involving Port Authorities are what allow certain activities that are important for economic development. Those rules were expanded about 15-20 yrs ago to allow areas not actually a port to participate in those activities. Its a misnomer in many cases, but that's the deal.

By definition no distinction is made between inland or marine ports. Transportation and shipping takes place on the Ohio too. Pittsburgh, for example, also has a Port Authority (internationally London has won as well).

Just a name of a development group set up by the city to find old, useless properties and turn them into revenue generating properties.

NOW: UC confirms Cincinnati Gardens no longer an option for #Bearcats hoops during arena reno. Cintas, US Bank, BB&T still in play. @FOX19

Back when I lived in Cincy, the Port of Cincinnati processed more freight tonnage (coal, crushed limestone, etc.) on an annual basis than went through the Suez Canal. I don't know if that's still the case, but Cincinnati was (and perhaps still is?) an inland port.

A port authority, according to the Ohio Revised Code, is a body corporate or politic whose purpose is to engage in "activities that enhance, foster, aid, provide, or promote transportation, economic development, housing, recreation, governmental operations, culture, or research within the jurisdiction of the port authority."

That's pretty all-encompassing, I'd say, and management and administration of the Cincinnati Gardens certainly appears to mesh with the Port Authority's mandate.

Exactly. Port of Portland is the one here, although admittedly we do have more of a true water port on the Columbia River. On advanced manufacturing (not to get further astray), that's a terrific idea. Ironically, despite many manufacturing jobs moving oversees in the past few decades, during the current recovery, this is the main field where employers are struggling to find workers. Some of this is due to poor STEM programs in schools, etc, but these are good-paying jobs ($20+ an hour) for someone willing to put in the time and take some postsecondary training (many of them don't even require an Associate's degree. Good move by the city. Better news for UC fans!

Looking at it in the most simplified manner, if there are still riverboat cruises, technically, those do embark from a port, no?

It appears that Port Authorities and water are not the logical match one would assume. There are Port Authorities all over Ohio that do not have significant water resources like in Dayton, Springfield, Athens and numerous other small towns throughout the state.

Well, since we're way off topic anyway, this source indicates ours is the busiest inland port in the nation...

I can't believe Cintas is still an option.

My preference would be (in order)...

1) US Bank
2) BB&T
3) Armory Fieldhouse
4) High School Gym
.
.
.
.
.
.
832) Cintas Center

Why? it's probably the best arena to watch basketball of all the options and the most convenient to get to from main campus and park at.

Somebody help me out here...what is BB&T?

Never mind---That's NKU's place...now...it's nice and roomy, but that is a bit of a drive for locals.

Another option could be....to play in the bubble? You could also use Cincinnati State before you need go to a HS gym.

If I were a gambler...I'd say it's USBank.

Must be river ports.

I actually kind of like the idea of playing behind enemy lines. Maybe we could hang our NCAA banners, pack in some crowds, and totally own the place for a year.
