Exclamation Would your school EVER play an ACC team OOC?
If the ACC decides to stay at 8 games for football and simply encourages teams to play each other OOC when it fits the schedule, would your team EVER do so? I'd like to hear from fans of all 14 football member schools if possible (please be sure to make it clear which team you are answering for!)

For Virginia Tech, I doubt it - mainly because the Hokies already play UVa, Miami, UNC, GT and Pitt. There is some desire to play Clemson, FSU and possibly Louisville and NC State. They are playing Syracuse this year, albeit away. The last game against Wake Forest was so ugly I doubt anyone wants a repeat any time soon. BC is already annual, so that covers everybody.

If they did play an ACC team OOC it would probably have to be a made-for-tv neutral-site event against either FSU or Clemson, possibly in Charlotte... but I just don't see it ever happening.

What are YOUR thoughts?

It would seem natural for Duke and NCSU to play but it's unlikely. Duke needs to show the flag in other parts of the country because its alumni base is so far flung and because it can and must recruit players nationally. Playing NCSU pleases the local alumni like me but isn't helpful otherwise. It's doubtful that Duke plays any other ACC school as a non-conference game.

I would say Miami. When it was announced that SU was going to the ACC, I was disappointed initially, and the one thing that did get me excited was to be able to play Miami and VT again. We haven't played Miami yet and wont for a couple more years. We play VT this season, finally. The games between those 3 in the BE were always big games. Now with all three teams being down with SU in the dumps, those games may not be that exciting now. But with all three making great coaching hires those games may mean something in the future.

Obviously I can't speak for the intentions of Louisville's athletic dept, however as a fan I would definitely like to schedule some conference mates OOC. I don't like playing the Coastal teams only once in a 6-7 year period. In our first 11 years in the ACC, we'll only play VT once, which is ridiculous.

I wouldn't mind VT/UL, but it would have to be a TV special -- maybe played in Cincinnati or Washington, DC?

Would rather play better teams out of conference.

Pitt wouldn't. Our main rivals are out of conference and the three teams Pitt wants to play annually (Syracuse, VTech, and Miami) are already on the schedule. If ND was considered an ACC team then Pitt would schedule them more often if it could.

UofL probably wouldn't. To many Great possibilities outside the conference.

Plus we will play everyone eventually inside the conference..........just be patient. Even though I would LOVE to play VTech more often, I would rather play schedule for OOC an highly ranked $ec or Big 10+4 school because I know we will play everyone in the ACC eventually.

If Clemson or GT played an ACC team OOC from time to time I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I like the neutral site setup as well.

Make it a one game event each year in Charlotte or Atlanta, or DC, or NYC or Jacksonville or Orlando

2016 - Charlotte : Clemson vs Virginia Tech
2017 - Atlanta : FSU vs Georgia Tech
2018 - Orlando : Miami vs Louisville
2019 - Washington DC maybe NYC : Virginia vs Syracuse

Feature it on the ACC Network

BC vs GT this year playing is two teams coming off a 3-9 year in Ireland and it's part of the big opening weekend with more pub than two 3-9 teams probably deserve.

I like the neutral site idea. If Louisville did it I think it would be for either VT, Pitt or Miami. VT is our closest ACC member & I for one would love to get revenge for the Gator Bowl.

but unless we win more OOC games outside the ACC, the other conferences will just say we are padding our stats. (Not that I care) but they will say it.03-yawn

Carolina has already made the decision to play Wake Forest as an OOC game.
Carolina played in their 1st game in 1888 against Wake Forest and has played the Deacs over 100 times.
I hope we continue to schedule Wake as an OOC game so we can play every year.

Good point. Wake Forest IS a rival for UNC. VT already plays the teams which might be considered rivals (UVA, Miami, maybe Pitt). GT is a sort of rival for VT, and Clemson certainly could be one, as could Louisville and FSU. Even NC State has a lot in common with VT - the Hokies just don't play the Wolfpack enough to become a rivalry.

It seems to me that there is an unspoken context to this question which, if spoken, might change Pitt's perspective. That is, what if the divisional alignment were to change in a way that one of those three weren't on your schedule very often?

One reason why there haven't been more such OOC games scheduled is that the current divisions actually work pretty well for most members.

I don't think many current member's reluctance to play a league member OOC is a matter of principle. It just isn't necessary as we are currently organized. But if Va Tech were to be moved to the Atlantic Division, I could see the possibility of the Hokies doing this occasionally. Note I'm not saying this as a VT fan - just a spectator. For members who will always have a clearly more attractive option OOC, like Clemson or FSU, it's hard for me to see them doing this.

RE: Would your school EVER play an ACC team OOC?
We discussed the issue with Duke and they did not want to add a home and away with us. UVa, VT, and GT might be a possibility, but in our case no one in the Coastal lacks for appearances in the State of North Carolina as they have Duke and UNC.

The divisional line up now keeps us out of Maryland, and out of Virginia, and Georgia 5 years out of 6, all places where we recruit.

While Pitt would be good for us, it does nothing for them due to Duke and UNC. Maybe UNC/Duke and NC State/WF and UVa/VT, and GT/Pitt need to swap for a year every two years or so of something like that.

From my perspective the games that don't happen that should happen more often are:

NC State and Duke/VT/GT
VT and WF/NC State/Clemson
UVa and Clemson/WF
UNC and Clemson/FSU/Louisville
FSU and UNC/VT/Pitt/GT
Pitt and FSU
Miami and Louisivlle/Syracuse
Louisville and UNC/Miami
Duke and NC State
GT and NC State/FSU

It's going to take a 13th game to make this better.

It would depend on the sport. NCSU and UNC scheduled an OOC baseball game a year or two ago. It got rained out but they did try. Basketball is probably the only sport NCSU would schedule Duke OOC for.

Conferences are going to get bigger before they get smaller. Playing every school every year is only going to get harder. I think we are headed towards a pro type scheduling system where you play schools in your group/pod/clique/division multiple times and others randomly.
