School Familiarity
So on another thread some posters mentioned having not heard of other conference members before their school joined the conference. I think that stuff is pretty interesting as what may be a household name for TXST fans won't be for GS fans, etc. So I'm curious to see who was familiar with who put forth in list form for all conference schools.

I'll Start:

TXST: First heard of because my mom attended, so familiar with since childhood
stAte: First heard of when they played UT in the mid 2000s. Watched it at my neighbors and was pulling for y'all, I remember it being a good game and one of his friends said he went to school at stAte and that y'all were D2. I didn't know any better and was excited that UT would struggle against a D2.
APP: First heard of because of Michigan game
UTA: First heard of when I attended TXST and we played y'all in stuff
ULM: First heard of because of NCAA 2004, unfortunately I remember y'all were awful
ULL: Same as ULM
Troy: First heard of because of NCAA 2004 and Demarcus Ware and Osi. Quite the pair of D ends
South Alabama: First heard of when y'all played UTSA
GSU: same, wish y'all could've beaten them...
Little Rock: never heard of until we joined the conference
GS: never heard of until y'all joined the conference
Idaho: First heard of when Mike Iupati got drafted in the first round. I just assumed y'all were a big football school because of that, but then we joined the WAC....
NMSU: First heard of because I could never remember which NM school Brian Urlacher went to.
Coastal: First heard of y'all when y'all gave NDSU a good game in 2014

RE: School Familiarity
TXST: First heard of because we moved to TX in March 1982 and that football season SWT was heading for another NC. It was actually covered on Austin news channels.
stAte: I think when we were working on making the move and conferences were being discussed on BCF.
APP: First heard in the late 90's because my cousin's son went there
UTA: First heard when I started attending TXST stuff in 2005
ULM: I can't really say but before TXST was in the SBC
ULL: Same as ULM
Troy: First heard of - not really sure. Just one of those things
South Alabama: First heard of when you played UTSA (this!)
GSU: Rumblings on an FCS board (some nasty stuff too)
Little Rock: never heard of until we joined the conference
GS: That would be 2005
Idaho: First heard of - another one of those teams you just knew but can't recall exact timeframe
NMSU: same as Idaho
Coastal: First heard of when they started going to Regionals in baseball. I always rooted for the non "p5" teams and I kept my "eye"on them.

RE: School Familiarity
App: As I'm sure it'll be reiterated by many, I too first heard of the Mountaineers during their improbable upset of Michigan back in 07 (I was laid up on my parents couch extremely hung over from my first college party the friday night before lol).

Coastal: I can't remember that exact game or year, but I'm confident it was some FCS playoff game that was televised. I never knew they were located so close to Myrtle Beach as I had visited their twice during my college years until later.

Georgia Southern: I had read about Arkansas State losing to the Eagles back in the 80s during the (now known as FCS) National Championship game, but I first recall actually seeing them back in 2010 when they were in the FCS playoffs (playing I think Delaware?)

Georgia State: I pride myself on knowing the majority of FBS/Division I programs, but I have to admit whenever the press release came out announcing that the sunbelt had invited Georgia state as full members and the university accepted was the first time I had EVER heard of Georgia State. I remember being blown away that their was a Georgia State, that they were located in the heart of Atlanta and that they were founding members of the Sunbelt.

La-La/ULM/USA/Troy: Becoming an Astate fan when I did, I quickly learned all four pretty quickly through various conference games. (Troy actually was the first team I ever saw Astate play in person at my first game in Jonesboro way back in 2005, and fast forward two years later Monroe was the first road trip I ever made to watch a college football game when I was freshman at Astate).

UTA/Texas ST: Being an avid sports fan that I am, I like to keep up with the other universities in the state so when UCA joined FCS/the Southland Conference back in 2006 that was when I first had heard of both the Mavs and the Bobcats. (Although wasn't it Southwest Texas State bobcats that Scott Bakula's team from the movie "Necessary Roughness" played? If so, then that's when I first heard of the Bobcats lol).

UALR: Even before becoming an Astate fan, growing up in central arkansas I was very familar with the Trojans just because they played so close to my home town (and I knew a few people that went there both to play and attend as students).

NMSU: My eldest brother attended Arkansas and my family and I traveled to visit him during his first semester his freshman year back in 2004, and we went to a Hogs game and they were playing the Aggies; it was a very lopsided game, it was a cold dreary November game and their MAY have been 30,000 people there.

Idaho: Way back when I picked up my first NCAA Football game, playing as Arkansas State the Vandals were still sunbelt members in that version and I remember being amused their was a team called the "Idaho Vandals" and simultaneously being confused as to why teams from Arkansas and Idaho were conference mates lol.

RE: School Familiarity
TXST: Probably when they came up for consideration for the WAC.
stAte: When they joined the conference.
APP: Probably before the Michigan game, but that's what I'm going with
UTA: Not real sure. Probably when the joined the conference.
ULM: Don't know why, but I've known this name a long time
ULL: Back when they were Southwestern La
Troy: The longest. They had a branch in the town I grew up in and my aunt went there.
South Alabama: Probably when my family moved to this area in the 70's
GSU: Back when they were in the conference the first time. My sister also went there but that was after.
Little Rock: Not real sure about this one. It was probably when they joined the conference
GS: Can't put a finger on the exact time, but they've been familiar for a long time. Probably learned of them through their FCS days.
Idaho: Not the biggest state, but still a flagship university. I heard of them a long time ago.
NMSU: same as Idaho
Coastal: When we played them in baseball back in 2005.

RE: School Familiarity
Gnats: Let's say, we have a history. Probably when they joined the SoCon.
Coastal: When they announced football in 2001 or so. Then a week before they came to Boone in 2005 when they beat JMU. The next week, they were introduced to Appalachian in a 30-0 drubbing.
Ga State: When Lefty coached there way back when.
Troy: Some basketball game they played back around 1990 where they scored an ungodly number of points. Then, the two game "series" App played them in 1999.
USA: Saw them play Charlotte in basketball at the old coliseum in the days of the original Sun Belt.
stAte: "Hey, there's another ASU out there, except those imposters from out west."
ULM: In a college preview magazine after the name change.
Cajuns: From a poster that was hanging in the offices of our campus radio station. Oh. My. Gawd. They were...impressive.
Texas St: The 2004 game we played in Boone.
Idaho: When they won the Potato Bowl. I won $$$ on them, because...I confused them for Boise State. Boise State had beaten App in the 2004 playoffs, and I was impressed. Sorry about that, but thanks.
NM State: I knew they existed, but given the distance, they didn't much cross my mind until we joined the league.

1. App State: I found out about them during my first year at GS. Hated them ever since.05-mafia
2. Arkansas State: I discovered Ark State while reading about some of my own school's history...1986. 03-nutkick
3. Coastal Carolina: I found out about them during GS's FCS days.
4. Georgia State: My mom graduated from here and it was an in-state option for me coming out of high school.
5. Idaho: Their bowl game in 2009.
6. Louisiana: I've heard the name "Ragin' Cajuns" for many years probably because of the uniqueness. The pepper mascot is great!
7. New Mexico State: I noticed them during their recent string of NCAA basketball appearances.
8. South Alabama: I had never heard of them until GS joined the Sun Belt.03-confused
9. Texas State: I had never heard of them until GS joined the Sun Belt.03-confused
10. Troy: Similar to Louisiana, I've heard the name off and on and I've seemed to remember the brand over the years.
11. ULM: I had never heard of them until GS joined the Sun Belt.03-confused
12. UT-Arlington: I had never heard of them until GS joined the Sun Belt.03-confused
13. Arkansas-Little Rock: I had never heard of them until GS joined the Sun Belt.03-confused

If you're from GS and never heard of TXST until you joined the Sun Belt.....you're definitely a young'un.

APP: 1987 playoffs
UTA: When we joined the Sun Belt

ULL: Somewhere around the 2000 season
Troy: High school, several of my friends went there ....
South Alabama: playing them in baseball
GSU: TAAC days, mid 1990's

RE: School Familiarity
I know I'm not a Sun Belter, but I figured I'd throw in mine:

A-State: Knew of them back in 2005 when I think they split the Sun Belt title? Definitely started realizing who they were when Gus Malzahn went there.

App State: Heard of them for a years in the early 2000's, but the Michigan game put them on the map for me.

NMSU: Started to notice them when UCF joined CUSA and UTEP had a rivalry with them.

Idaho: Heard of them when the Sun Belt formed because I thought it was really wacky that Idaho was even in the Sun Belt.

ULL: Heard of them back in 2007 or 2008 when they had Tyrell Fenroy who was rushing for 200 yards per game it seemed... and because we knocked yall around a few times in 05 and 07.

ULM: I remember ULM back in the early 2000's because they were so terrible in football. Really took notice though when they upset Arkansas and it was breaking all over ESPN.

USA: Heard of them when they began starting up their program.

Troy: Heard of Troy in the early 90's because UCF fans know how much they smacked us around. We had a bit of a rivalry with them. Really began to take notice again after watching national TV upsets of Missouri and Oklahoma State.

Texas State: Hadn't heard of them til they entered the WAC.

Georgia State: Heard of them when they joined the SBC because they were winless.

Georgia Southern: Heard of them because they are a storied program from FCS days.

RE: School Familiarity
I've been an avid reader of the NCAA preview mags (basketball and football) since middle school in the late 80s, so I was at least familiar with names, nicknames, locations, and conferences since then or since each school joined D1 which ever the case may be. But here's when I took notice of each.
-App - football billboard in Greensboro NC we passed everyday on the way to kindergarten.
-GA Southern - when they joined the SoCon
-Coastal - read about them going to Greensboro Hornets minor league baseball games and they shared their stadium with the Myrtle Beach Blue Jay's of the SAL.
-Georgia State - when they joined the CAA and played my wife's Alma mater VCU
-Troy - when they were D2 and beat DeVry (I think) by something like 100 pts in bball
-UL Lafayette - the Panther's Jake Delhomme while I lived in Charlotte
-Texas State - readings about LBJ in middle school
-Arkansas State - liked their logo while playing EA NCAA football
-UALR - SI did a preseason article in the 80s about the sweet sixteen and it was the first time I'd ever heard about that round of the tourney (I might have been 8?) But I remember UALR was one of the schools they predicted to make that it that I'd never heard of. I don't think they made the tourney though.
-USA/ULM/UTA- knew of them but really didn't until the App to SBC talk started to be serious

RE: School Familiarity
App was the 1987 playoff game on the frozen tundra
Ark St was the 1986 National Title Game
GSU was in the 80's I followed GS basketball and remember them as a rival
UALR was our biggest basketball rival in the old TAAC
Coastal was from our first meeting
USA had never heard of them until we joined the Belt
Troy was my only out of state college visit in High School and I knew of the Div II run they had. Also when they moved up I asked why we couldn't and became disappointed in our administration at the time.
ULM I knew from FCS but didn't realize it was the same school until we moved up.
ULL I remember they really sucked and didn't realize how much they had improved untill we joined
UTA had never heard of
Tex St only knew as the team that got a great coach fired
New Mexico St I had seen on TV occasionally
Idaho I thought was still FCS

GS I heard of watching the first football game on TV I had ever sat all the way through. I had never been a fan of football but that one game made me a fan. The 1985 Title Game was one of the greatest come from behind victories I have ever seen. I only watched it because my dad had said GS was from the town we were moving to in a few weeks.

RE: School Familiarity
App- that horrible year they destroyed my year (I grew up as a Michigan fan (family went there) in Delaware). Still angry about y'all rushing the field with 5 minutes to play.
Ark State-Playing NCAA Football growing up
GSU-A SI article announcing a start up FBS school, might have gone to a GSU-Delaware basketball game before then, IDK.
GS-2000 when you guys beat Delaware in the Tub
USA-2012, because EA Sports left you guys out of NCAA Football.
ULL-Growing up playing NCAA Football as a kid, I would play as them in dynasty mode because they had Pepper themed Pride Stickers and thought they were cool. So like 2000.
UTA-to be honest, last summer when I began looking into the Sun Belt.
ULM-Another one I know as a kid, just because I played NCAA Football.
Troy-I remember watching a season opener national tv game that was on in the early 2000's
Texas St- Probably heard about them in 2010 when they announced their plan to join the FBS
Idaho-I was familiar with them as a kid, just because of the fact they were the only school other than Syracuse to play in a dome
UALR-never heard of them before researching the Sun Belt. Sorry, nonfootball schools don't get a lot of attention.

RE: School Familiarity
stAte - mid 2000s as another struggling SBC team
USA- when you added football
ULL- mid 2000s because of your pepper mascot and playing TXST in softball
UTA-early to mid 90s. interviewed a professor of archeology there in 6th grade for a project, ran track meets there in high school
ULM- 2003ish when i started at TXST and played yall and learned you had been in the Southland
Troy- Not sure. Probably early to mid 2000s when yall were the only good team in the SBC
Texas St- 2002 when i was looking for somewhere other than following everyone to UT or A&M like sheep
Idaho- Mid 2000s when I heard stories from Big Sky fans about yall
UALR- not sure. i hope it wasn't when we joined the conference
App St - 2004 when we played in football
GS - 2004 when I started following FCS more closely
GSU - when you started football. The posters on AGS were obnoxious about it
CCU - sometime in mid 2000s when I got into FCS football.
