A lot of ULL folks hate the pepper. But a ton of people know their program from the pepper and like the pepper.

RE: School Familiarity
Not sure if anybody is actually reading these, what WTH, it looks like fun!

GSU: Lived in GA my whole life. Not sure when I first heard of us, but the school's existence was definitely confirmed when I did my undergrad work at Mercer and both schools were in the TAAC.

GS: Grew up in south GA. Probably knew of GS before any other SBC school.

Troy: Probably second to GS in my timeline. Troy St. was among the schools I'd hear about athletes I grew up with looking at.

App: Stood out among the colleges that sent me stuff in high school. Liked the brochures but never visited. Who knows, maybe in a quantum parallel universe, I'm a Mountaineer.

USA: One of the first seminars I attended after starting grad school at GSU (maybe the very first, actually) was given by a USA professor. Once we started football, I realized we were linked there, too.

stAte, ULM, Cajuns: Probably noticed through games vs. SEC foes. (Lifetime college football fan but never had a team of my own until GSU entered the ring. I have followed Auburn for a decade due to my wife.) Also, "Ragin' Cajuns" sticks out.

Little Rock: Worked with a guy ~10 years ago who had attended there.

TXST, UTA: It was conference realignment that made me notice these two. Probably TXST to the WAC, and I guess when UTA came to the Belt.

CCU: There's a possibility that a few of the SC schools ran together in my head for a while (CofC, Charleston Southern, CCU). Solidified by realignment talk, but I probably noticed y'all during GSU's time in FCS.

Idaho, NMSU: As flagships (or at least very close), these may as well have always existed in my mind.

RE: School Familiarity
I'll bite:

GSU: When I started attending Georgia Southern. Basketball game or something.

GS: Was in Army stationed in Germany and my folks were telling me when I got out and went back to college I should think about Southern because they had a great football program, this guy named Erk, etc. And then, to top it off, a lady who worked at the American bank for GIs had a son who played linebacker for Southern.

Troy: At the education center in Germany. Troy was one of the schools that offered classes to the military.

App: The playoff game where Raymond fumbled.

USA: Sun Belt.

stAte, One of Southern's I-AA title foes.

Little Rock: Sun Belt.

TXST, UTA: Texas State beat Southern in 2005 or 2006.

CCU: Native South Carolinian, I took classes at Coastal Carolina when it was still a college and had about 3,000 students. Mostly partied.

Idaho, NMSU: Idaho from its proud I-AA days. NMSU from seeing them play basketball.

UALR
USA

NMSU

Troy-knew them as Troy State before they joined the Sunbelt, because of there band (band nerd). Love them when added to Sunbelt.

App State- When they beat Michigan

TXST.- I was teaching in Natchitoches, and my wife won tickets to a NWST. Baseball game against TXST., and we went to the game, but when the WAC was collapsing is when I heard about them.

GS- I knew about App St before GS, can't really remember

GSU, not until they joined the Belt.
UTA

Coastal- 2004 when I was watching them play Savannah State in baseball.

RE: School Familiarity
I lived in Pennsylvania until 1999 and moved to metro-Atlanta during high school, so I was pretty late in learning about all of the SBC teams.

GS - The Eagles were in the middle of their fifth and sixth FCS championship runs just as I moved to Georgia. I remember hearing about them and Adrian Peterson just after we settled in.

App St. - First season that I was at Southern. I've always been a sports nut, so I've been sworn against the Appys since finding out they are a conference rival.

New Mexico St./Idaho - As some others on this thread have said, I first ran across the Aggies and Vandals via video games. I like to build up the lower rated teams and, unfortunately, that's what led me to this pair. Vandals is still a kick-ass name though.

ULL - Ragin' Cajuns is an even better name than Vandals, so I always got a chuckle out of that.

ULM - I would occasionally forget which Louisiana school was the Cajuns, so I stumbled across the Warhawks (the SBC is severely underrated in terms of cool and unique nicknames)

stAte - Not sure if I remember anything about them before getting to GS and learning about the Eagles' history and their '86 title game win over ASU.

Texas State - Something about trying to run out a quarter and a half of clock despite beating the Bobcats' heads in for two hours.

South Alabama - During undergrad, one of my buddies was studying to get into med school. He had USA high on his list of choices and I also noted the solid baseball team.

Troy - First noticed them during their string of Sun Belt titles. I'm sure that I watched plenty of weeknight games that featured Troy.

Georgia St. - Only knew it was a school in Atlanta. I took a bunch of mass media courses in high school and heard that State has a good film program. But then I found the sports management program at Southern, not to mention a campus that I liked a lot better.

I think that's the best description I've ever heard for that game.

We ran the prevent offense.

Also, for anyone that remembers, that throw across the field on one of our kickoff returns.....I still have no idea wtf that was about.

I was at the game but I had my VCR set to record and eventually transferred it to DVD, without commercials. I've watched it more than once so, yeah , I remember that throw.

I'm not young but I didn't attend and I didn't follow too much college anything until my daughter went to TXST.

I watched the Bowl games on and around New Year's but that's about it besides the Army/Navy game.

RE: School Familiarity
App State= The Michigan Game

Idaho= NCAA 08 playing as Boise State in dynasty mode and playing Idaho every season.

ULL= Not really sure when but have been familiar with ULL for almost as long as I have been paying attention to college football.

ULM= Same as ULL.

NMSU= Not sure when but a while back saw a NMSU basketball game on TV, don't remember any real details except for the NMSU logo standing out to me.

GS= When I first started researching FCS football about 5 years ago I kept seeing GS pop up because all their championships.

Georgia State= Had not heard of Georgia State until recently but now when I name Sun Belt schools to my friends Georgia State is one of the ones most often recognized thanks to their NCAA tourney run.

CCU= Seeing the basketball team on ESPN 2 hosting a Big South Championship game in the Williams Brice arena.

UTA= Not really sure when I first heard of UTA but have known of them for a while for some reason.

UALR= Not really sure, just one of those schools I knew existed because they had a strange acronym in UALR that stuck out when checking scores to basketball games.

TX State= I think the first time I can remember TX State was a scene from Friday Night Lights the series when coach Taylor was a college coach briefly and the stadium he was at was TX State's.

USA= When I played NCAAF 14 Heisman mode I was a RB and wanted to go to a less established school and just put up ridiculous numbers so I picked USA because I liked their jersey's. Needless to say I eventually led USA to 4 BCS Bowl Games.

Arkansas State= When I played for USA in NCAA 14.

Troy= Saw them playing UNT or someone similar one night on ESPN 2 or ESPN U probably about 10 years ago now.

Yeah, they made sure people knew that was upcoming on an episode. It had a mistake in it when they panned the field. They forgot to CGI the name on the field. They also superimposed it like it was in downtown Austin. Guess the great view wasn't good enough.

RE: School Familiarity
Been a college football & basketball fan for as long as I can remember watching games on TV. Always reading Street & Smith's yearbooks as far back as I can remember.

App State: Growing up in a little town in NC, most of my teachers from 1 to 12 were App grads. First visit was summer before Sr year for a yearbook conference. Immediately hooked.

Arkansas State: 1984 when they played UT-Chattanooga in I-AA playoffs.

CCU: Been going to Myrtle Beach forever and have known about Coastal since it was a two year community college.

GA Southern: Had an relative who went there before football was brought back. Followed since they brought football back, because every college football fan in the South knew who Erk Russell was. Watching them beat Furman in 1985 I-AA championship game on a last minute throw from Tracy Ham in some foreign country named Tacoma Washington. First hand in 1987 when we beat them in the playoffs on one of the coldest days a football game was ever played in Boone.

Georgia State: In 1989 for basketball. Our HC at the time told me they pulled up to the address listed but it looked like a office building. Found out the gym was on the 2nd floor of the building. He thought that was nuts.

Idaho: 1982 I-AA playoffs, App's first year in I-AA. Loved the colors of Black & REAL Gold and the name Vandals.

Louisiana: When they were Southwest Louisiana. Admired them for refusing to get kicked down to I-AA like the rest of us. Became more familiar when Marty Fletcher left VMI to coach their basketball team.

NMSU: Not sure when.

Texas State: When we played in 2004.

Troy: Seeing them on TV during the 1998 I-AA playoffs and thinking their stadium was a clone of ours when it was known as Conrad Stadium back in the 70's.

UALR: When it appeared we would be joining the SB

ULM: When they were NE La in the 1982 I-AA playoffs. Most notably in the 1987 National Championship game. One of the best games I-AA championship games in history. Coming back from a big deficit in the 4th quarter to beat Marshall. Stan Humphries was incredible in that game.

UTA: See UALR

USA: When the SB was formed in 1976. Living near Charlotte watching highlights of them playing UNCC.

App State: I think I got something from you guys in the mail my senior year of high school. But my first real encounter was 2004 (W 54-7 in the boro).

Arkansas State: Watching the championship game on replay about 3 years ago after hearing you were one of the members in our new conference.

CCU: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOTQbHb2zoo

GA Southern: Didn't really know they existed till my sophomore year of high school (2002). I knew a couple of friends who were going there after they graduated. I got accepted to UGA, Southern, and Kennesaw and ultimately chose GS because of their IT program.

Georgia State: My sister started school there in the late 90's.

Idaho: I probably always assumed they were a major state school but had never had any real recollection of them prior to moving to the Sun Belt.

Louisiana: I lived/worked/got my masters in Alexandria / New Orleans in 2008-2010. I worked in college ministry and would meet people from ULL (I call it ULL because there wasn't a single soul in Alexandria or New Orleans that I ever heard call it UL) and ULM at the annual conference.

NMSU: Sun Belt move.

Texas State: Sun Belt move. Weird thing is, I was a Sophomore at Georgia Southern in 2005 and I have ZERO recollection of that football game, and no I didn't drink alcohol then.

Troy: Did you guys put a scare into a major P5 program at some point in the early 2000's? I seem to remember watching something like that. Also I'm a cowboys fan and I knew that Demarcus Ware graduated from Troy.

UALR: Sun Belt Move.

ULM: Same as UL.

UTA: Sun Belt Move.

USA: Sun Belt Move.

Me:
App State: When they won their FCS title in 2005

Arkansas State: Grew up thirty miles from the university. Whole family attended there. Thought they were like D2 or something because of the Hog brainwashing. However, remember many stories growing up of the successful 1970 team. First game I attended was UCA game in '97. Only reaffirmed by ignorance of us being below Arkansas in football. Good lord, that's shameful.

CCU: 2010. One of my friend's friends went to school there.

GA Southern: 2002. Finally heard about the 1986 title game. Also found out there was some guy with the last name Ham.03-nutkick

Georgia State: When they joined the Sun Belt.

Idaho:1997. Broncos first SB victory. Im a nerd and was looking to see where Mark Schlereth went to school.

Louisiana: Same as Idaho. Mid 90's. Looking to see where Brian Mitchell went to school

NMSU: Sun Belt.

Texas State: Weird. I remember watching some COPS like TV show back in college and they stopped some real "winners" from Texas State University at San Marcos.

Troy:Sun Belt.

UALR: 1980's growing up.

ULM: NCAA Football 2000, I think.

UTA: Maybe three years ago.

USA: 1990s. Good basketball school.

Just meant we used to play in the same league as a lot of the schools are comenting about and/or schedule them for MBB. We were in the same conference as UCF and played them a lot. RJ's shot vs Baylor was also not the first time we have upset someone in th tourney. We beat Wisconsin in 2001 and Lefty Dreissell was our coach. But a lot of people do only watch power conference schools.
