In Division I history, only one athletic director (Jeremy Foley) has guided a school to multiple national titles in football (1996, 2006, 2008) and men’s basketball (2006, 2007).

That's an unbelievable run of success.

He was the best Athletic Director in the Nation...now it falls on our guy Tom Jurich...sure Florida will make a run at him to replace Foley.

Surprising that he is retiring at such a young age - 63. It makes me wonder if he has had feelers from P5 conferences whose commissioners are older than he is.

He has given Florida (and with his protégé moving to UGA) and Georgia flimsy schedules that have harmed interest in football.

Good riddance.

such bs. To act like Florida is ANY worse than a huge MAJORITY of college football schools across the country scheduling is complete crap. Very few schools play any more P5 games OOC than just 1. But Florida gets called on it? F that. And 2 of the next 4 years- they play Michigan and Miami- in addition to Florida St. Some flimsy schedules there.

The turn UGA schedule has taken has been an embarrassment. The Dawgs went scheduling OKST, CU and ASU to cupcakes for their OOC lineup.

so I guess UNC and Notre Dame being on the schedules 3 of the next 4 years is just a figment of the imagination?

How many times has Florida left the state since Foley became AD?

Florida schedules really weak games other than the mandatory 9.

And that change coincided with the Florida Assistant AD, McGarity, moving to the Georgia AD position. He openly talked about copying Foley's scheduling model. One year when he scheduled Idaho St. (winless vs. FCS competition that year-they beat a Division II team), it was called the weakest opponent since the 40s. The empty seats (despite sellouts), lack of enthusiasm and pushback from fans have forced him to back up somewhat.

who gives a **** how many times they leave the state. Playing FSU is better than playing a majority of P5 teams around, regardless of the location.

Usually the head football coach has a good degree of input in those games. The A.D. is where the buck stops, but depending upon the school the coaches sometimes have too much say.

And MAC member or not, Toledo is hardly an easy game. Just ask Arkansas. In state cupcakes are usually money games for the smaller school's athletic budget and is frequently something the legislature wants done to help out the smaller schools.

That's not what the Gators are doing. This year, they play UMass, North Texas, and Presbyterian in Gainesville. They're really disrespecting their season ticket holders by making them pay for so many games like that. Wouldn't be surprised if some give up their seats and just buy tickets on the secondary market for games like FSU and LSU when they come to Gainesville.

RE: Florida AD Jeremy Foley Retiring...
I am not sure Florida is the one to be called out on schedules

I have stated again and again that the Big 12 actually plays on average more P5s than the SEC and that is supported clearly by 2015, but last year Florida did play 9 P5 games and no D1-AA games which was a rare combination for the SEC

and as for the AD retiring at his age he had a pretty great run, but I think he learned from "The Old Ball Coach" and from Urban Meyer (Meyer especially) sometimes it is best to hit the door when things are good and enjoy some of that big money you made and survey the landscape and then come back in for another run rested and ready and choosing your best situation instead of letting the situation be dictated to you time and again especially after a good run and when that run has slowed and people are expecting you to flip the switch and bring it right back

Florida scheduled Georgia Southern and lost.
Georgia Scheduled Boise State and lost.

Florida lost to an FCS school at the time, and Georgia lost to the best G5 school for more than 10 years. Which one was the most embarrassing lost?

Gators need not to sleep on UMass. They almost beat Vanderbilt in Nashville.

It was all the AD at UGA. The previous AD wanted national exposure against good teams and was playing H-H with teams like Arizona St., Oklahoma St. and Clemson. When McGarity came in, he immediately changed the scheduling philosophy. He wanted guaranteed, inexpensive wins. It was Georgia Tech ooc and the 3 weakest teams he could find, often scheduling bad FCS along with a couple of weak G5 schools. He really messed with the atmosphere at UGA home games. To some extent, that has spilled over into the conference games.

Do ticket buyers purchase tickets to games that are winnable or to games that provide a good match up? Different strokes for different folks, right?

RE: Florida AD Jeremy Foley Retiring...
maybe Big 12 teams do play more P5 games than average SEC team- but the SEC champion will 99.99% of the time have at least 10 p5 games, which is guess what, exactly the same number as the Big 12 champion.

Oh and last year- Florida played 10 P5 games. 8 SEC games, FSU, and then SEC title game.
