Baseball Preview: Maryland (4 P.M. Start On Tuesday)
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW continues its homestand with a two-game non-conference series with Maryland beginning on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. start.
UNCW's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be holding a food drive at the stadium and will be collecting canned foods, which will go to the Good Shepherd Homeless Shelter.
The Seahawks own a four-game winning streak after sweeping three games from VCU over the weekend. UNCW carries an 8-9 record into the series.
Maryland, which stands at 12-6, has posted an 11-1 record in its last 12 games after sweeping Princeton at home last weekend. The Terps lone loss of the stretch was a 9-2 setback at North Carolina.
UNCW freshman Zarion Sharpe will make his first start of the season on Tuesday following a pair of relief appearances to open his career. A starter for Wednesday had not be announced as of this preview.
Casey Golden, a senior outfielder for the Seahawks, was named Colonial Athletic Association Player-of-the-Week after hitting .500, belting three home runs and driving in seven runs in the sweep of VCU. Golden, who ranks second in the league with seven home runs this season, moved into 11th all-time at UNCW with 26 career home runs.
UNCW owns a 9-4 lead in the all-time series and last won two-of-three from the Terps during the 2015 season. All 13 games have been played at Brooks Field.
Marty Costes lead the Maryland lineup with a .324 batting average while drawing 12 walks and compiling a .448 on base average. In the power department, Madison Nickens has three of UM's 12 round trippers on the season while seven different Terps have driven in at least 10 runs.
Andrew Miller has been the key to the bullpen, having struck out 10 in 10.1 innings while nailing down three saves. Miller has limited opponents to a meager .097 average.
Following this mid-week's two-game series, the Seahawks open conference play hosting defending champion William & Mary. The series kicks off with a 6 p.m. start on Friday.
