Baseball Preview: #20 Coastal Carolina
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The Seahawks host the defending national champion Coastal Carolina for the second time this season on Tuesday when the two longtime rivals take the field for a 4 p.m. start.
The Chanticleers (11-7) edged the Seahawks (5-9) earlier this season with a 4-1 at Brooks Field. The two were to conclude their three-game series on Wednesday, but that game has already been postponed until May 9 in Conway, S.C.
UNCW captured its second series of the season last weekend, topping Longwood, 11-1, in the series finale on Saturday. The Seahawks broke open a 2-1 game in the seventh inning with five runs and added four more in the eight to conclude the scoring.
UNCW came alive at the plate with five home runs against Longwood and extended their home run streak to five games. The Seahawks hit .290 during the series while committing just one error. The pitching staff posted a 2.67 ERA while striking out 27 in 27 innings of work.
CCU, meanwhile, earned a series win over visiting Illinois on Saturday with a 6-0 blanking of the Illini. The Chants dropped the series opener, but rallied for a 3-2 win in game two.
Seahawk junior righthander Austin Warren (1-1) will make his third start of the season and the second against Coastal. Righthander Zack Hopeck (1-1) will make his fourth start of the young season.
Tuesday's game continues what is now a 17-game homestand for UNCW with Wednesday's postponement. The Seahawks host VCU for three-games, beginning on Friday with a 4 p.m. start.
