* Elon is locked in as the 6-seed heading into the final weekend. With their CAA games wrapped up, they will face Bowling Green in a pretty meaningless non-conference series other than serving as a final tuneup for the Phoenix.

* JMU, Hofstra, and Towson are, of course, all eliminated. However, all three teams face opponents whose seeds are not yet locked in, and thus can play spoiler. JMU visits Northeastern, Hofstra hosts W&M, and Towson faces us.

* Charleston, currently in 5th, is @ 3rd-place Delaware in the final weekend. Both teams can finish as high as 1st or as low as 5th depending on the results of the weekend.

* By virtue of the Charleston-Delaware series, we and Northeastern can finish no lower than 4th.

* If we take 2/3 from Towson, we can finish no lower than 2nd. A sweep and we finish 1st.

pretty wide open it seems going into the tourney. If you had your guess, who wins it?

I'd bet money that I saw we couldn't finish lower than third, but I can't find that statement from anyone I follow now. You know more than most, so I'm not questioning what you've stated, but I'm a bit surprised.

Should be a fun tournament. I'll feel a lot better if we finish top 2.

Should we finish 3rd or below our chances of winning will be reduced significantly because of our weak pitching. Past our Sunday starter (& it's iffy) we just don't have a lot of good starting arms. We need to be able to win it in three. Should we win it in four I will be more than happy to eat my words. But I feel it highly improbable.

RE: UNCW Baseball - 2017 Thread
There's no doubt that there's an enormous advantage to finishing in the top 2. If you're the 1-seed, you have a 100 % chance of making it to at least Friday. You can't be eliminated the first 2 days of the tourney. The 2-seed has a very small risk of being forced into an elimination game Thursday. Both 1 and 2 are just two wins away from the title matchup.

If you're 3-6, you run the risk of being eliminated on Day 1. And even if you get through, you're using an ace or another key arm. The 3-6 also have to win 3 games to get to the title game undefeated.

If we get swept, NU sweeps JMU, W&M sweeps Hofstra and Delaware sweeps Charleston, it would look like this:

1. Northeastern 16-7
2. Delaware 16-8
3. W&M 15-8
4. UNCW 14-10
5. Charleston 12-12
6. Elon 12-12

The same would be true if Charleston swept Delaware were the only change to the above scenario. They'd be 15-9 and would move ahead of us, with Delaware dropping to 5.

Extremely unlikely all of that would happen, of course, but yes, it is possible for us to fall as far as 4.

Looking at the full spectrum of expected outcomes, I'd say we'll either be the 1 or the 2. I don't see us falling below that line. Towson just is not at all a good team, and the most I could see them doing is to steal 1 game.

Oh, and in an effort to back up my point that Towson is not good, here's some facts and figures for Towson in CAA-only games:

Offense

* 92 Runs (9th - last in the league)
* .236 Team Batting Average (last)
* 9 Team HR's (last)
* .329 Team Slugging (last...by nearly 50 points)
* 326 OBP (8th)
* 2 Sac Bunts (last)

Pitching
* 7.15 team ERA (last)
* .325 Opposing BA (last)
* 146 K's (last)
* 30 HR allowed (t-last)

We really ought to sweep.

Ought to and doing it are two different things. towson will be playing fast & loose with nothing to lose. They are at home & the last game will be senior day. It could be a tough weekend - especially given the way we have played on the road. The Hawks cannot afford to let up one little bit.

No, what this means:

Game 6: Winner Game 3 vs. Low seed Game 4/5 Loser - 7 p.m.

Is that the lowest seed (I.E. 6 seed is "lowest seed", followed by 5, 4, etc) from the Game 4/5 losers would have to play again Thursday night. That excludes the 1-seed, since the 1-seed can't be the lowest seed among those losing teams.

Make sense? I think the confusion comes from people thinking lowest seed = lowest NUMBER seed.

If the 1-seed loses on Thursday, they'd play their elimination contest in Game 8, on Friday.

Not sure. It's actually a HIPPA violation for anyone in athletics to discuss it or give out specific information on the injury, so I usually don't ask questions.

I do know that Roberson is done for the season, however. Now he waits to see where he'll go in the draft on June 12. My guess is he goes somewhere in the first 10 rounds and will forego his Senior season.

Baseball Preview: North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina - UNCW continues its nine-game roadswing to close out the regular season Tuesday at third-ranked North Carolina. First-pitch is set for 6 p.m.

The Seahawks are coming off a series win at Elon over the weekend while the Tar Heels also claimed their series at Virginia Tech. UNCW and UNC split last year's home and home series, each winning at home.

UNCW closes out the regular season this weekend with three games at Towson. The series starts Thursday with a 3 p.m. start.

Seahawks fell 7-2. We only had 3 hits, a season low. UNC carried a 7-0 lead into the 9th, when Cole Weiss finally got us on the board with a 2-run single.

Not an unexpected result there. On to the final CAA series with Towson, which begins Thursday at 3.

Not an unexpected result, but wish we could show a bit more life.

Seahawks K with the bases loaded, our 6th strikeout of the day offensively.

However, Towson's starter David Marrigi, a junior lefty, had to labor through that inning and is up to 61 pitches. Meanwhile, Royalty has only thrown 22 pitches in 2 innings of work.
