What position did the weakest hitter play? He might have been left in for his defense.
In weakest hitter, I assume he is talking about Pearcey, the replacement 2B. Our starting 2B suffered a knee injury the night before colliding at home with the catcher, may be done for the season. I'm sure first thought was a safety squeeze with Pearcey, but 1st/3rd were literally playing 10 yards from him. My guess is he felt he had to let him swing and try to put the ball in play with only one out...
The "pinch hitter" after that was our normal starting 1B who has been out two weeks with an oblique injury (he too was said to possibly be done for the year, we will see). He hit for our catcher (who was our secondary C and not hitting well) because we could replace him with our primary C.
It wasn't "odd" only because of the circumstances. However, it could be a tough row to hoe from here on... Replacement 1B (soph), replacement 2B (fresh), and whichever catcher, hitting .200, 180, .220 respectively in the 7-8-9 holes. Prior to the injuries, Chadwick (1B) was hitting .260 with some pop in the 6 hole, and Lancaster (2B) .320ish but was the hottest guy on the team in the 7 spot.
We will hope these Supers shook all big stage fears out, and this week lets the young guys embrace a next man up mentality.
