USMNT win the group after a dismal opening game against colombia. USMNT will fave Ecuador in the Copa QF.

Germany opens Euro with a convincing 2-0 Overy Ukraine. Some rusty spots but a dominating win nonetheless.

Brasil gets knocked out of the Copa by Peru on a controversial handball goal

Early competitors for Euro amazing plays are Luka Modric volley scorcher and Boateng's goal saving effort against Ukraine

Here is Modric's goal

Here is Boateng's save

The second might be one of the top 10 plays ever. IMO

RE: Soccer thread
U.S. would have been better off finishing in second place and facing Peru, although who could have anticipated Peru beating Brazil on a handball last night. Ecuador will be much tougher to beat than Peru.

Agreed on Boateng's save...originally thought it was a goal watching it live, but definitely an incredible effort.

Will be pulling for Wales to beat England this week...would be nice to own them in both soccer and rugby.

As a Spurs supporter, I find it funny/sad/appropriate that an England squad which is half Tottenham managed to drop points to Russia in injury time...

RE: Soccer thread
Who would have predicted BOTH that the US would win their group and that Brazil would not go through? Too bad about the handball, but Peru should have had a penalty kick earlier. Brazil did not look like Brazil.

I had both. Although picked the US to finish second, not first. Glad to be wrong on that one!

Brazil has looked like shite for a while. The refs carried them through the last world Cup with some ghastly phantom penalties. They really haven't looked cohesive or even truly threatening in a while.

Hope the US wins the quarters, so they come here to H-town for the semis.

Choke job by Wales in stoppage time as their defense breaks down near the goal and gets muscled around by Daniel Sturridge and the English. England wins 2-1.

RE: Soccer thread
Unfortunate outcome, but the Welsh have no business hanging with papa bear England. The result of the match is yet another indictment of the state of the English men's side.

I actually think that the English protecting their players through having quotas is backfiring for them. There are premiums paid to secure English talent in what just happens to be the richest league in the world, so much of that "talent" is grossly overvalued. I believe this hurts the English internationally, because many of their players now have a sense of entitlement that is not commensurate with their respective values as footballers.

Does anyone remember what Manchester City paid for Sterling? FFS. He is nowhere near being a world class match winner.

Only Vardy has real hunger as far as I can tell (though he is a bit of a thug), because he was ostensibly playing in pub sides not that many years ago, and he has had to fight for everything. The English don't have enough players with Vardy's drive, and they probably never will.

The English have mostly been big underachievers, but at least they had some genuinely great players back in the days when Liverpool and Forest were bossing Europe. Keegan, Anderson, Lineker, Shilton... Yeah, that isn't coming around for them again.

Sent off for a stupid stupid stupid fist to the face of another player.
