Would the 30k size attract bigger concerts?
OK, not saying this will be the main swinger here, but does the Phase II 30k stadium allow the region to attract a bigger concert act?

I live in Seattle and Billy Joel and Taylor Swift recently packed the CenturyLink Field on different nights. I think U2 went through there too.

Do we get these types of big ass shows today without a big venue?

I doubt the City of Norfolk would allow a concert to be held there. That might bother the neighbors...

No, we don't Petey. MONARCHSWIN is probably right that concerts won't be allowed.

You probably know about the VB Arena proposal that was approved by VB City Council. It will seat 18K, and should attract big name acts who won't, or can't do amphitheater shows. They are just waiting on the check to arrive from China.

Saw the biggest concert in Va at Foreman Field in 1974 when Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young played to an enormous crowd.

What other events do you imagine being held at the new stadium besides graduation?
Pretty sure a Monster Truck rally is out of the question lol.

I bet some of the people in that crowd now live in surrounding neighborhoods and would be very vocal against concerts there now.

It does look like a blast though!

It does! I love those guys!!
How did the Fire Marshall approve that many people though? I guess because it wasn't fully closed in it was okay?

I'm actually in that picture. There was also a great view of the concert in the pic book (coffee table book) on Old Dominion 1930-2000. Do you remember who the MC was for the concert? He was also a pretty big name at the time?

Even if the city allowed it, 30k is an awkward size. VB can handle the vast majority of acts at 20k and they'd prefer the amphitheater because it was built for concert acoustics. The superstars... demand 50k+. CenturyLink Field can hold 72k.

I saw Outkast at Foreman Field. I think the occasional concert that sold 20k tix would be permitted.

The neighbors controlling what can be done with the new stadium is only one of the problems you have by not building off campus. There are many more.

Building off campus would have presented many more issues than it would have solved.

It is a lot easier to keep the peace-and-quiet Larchmonters appeased than it would be getting crowds of any size to make the trek to an off-campus game.

We are only talking about 2 or 3 miles away. Definitely not a 91 mile UMass situation. A winning team will get the fan base to travel that far, right? A non winning team won't get the fan base to show up...no matter where the stadium is located.

What site is available 2 or 3 miles away?

What about right next to Harbor Park? I know the city of Norfolk has plans for that land but if the right opportunity arose they might change those plans. A large football stadium downtown would have attracted a bowl game, concerts and other entertainment dollars. But as a Virginia Beach resident I guess Norfolk people coming to the Amphitheater is ok by me.

One of the points of having football is to get a large number of Alumni on-campus. Putting it on campus defeats that purpose.
