Michigan-Notre Dame series expected to be revived
http://www.freep.com/story/sports/colleg.../85708508/

Quote:Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly explained today he expects the series will be revived, possibly as soon as 2018.

“We’re still working on it, there’s still some things obviously from our scheduling standpoint,” Kelly said at the Sound Mind Sound Body camp at Wayne State. “We’ve scheduled so far in advance. I’ve made it fairly public that I want to see this game happen and I know Jim (Harbaugh) wants to make it happen. So we’ve got to some hurdles we’ve got to work through but you’ve got two coaches who are committed to making it happen.

“I’m sure we’ll figure it out and get it done but we’ve still got a little work to get it done.”

Cue up more ND-B10 fan arguments. We know they're coming. Me? I'm tempted to include future B10-ND games as part of B10-ACC OOC games but that's me...03-wink

RE: Michigan-Notre Dame series expected to be revived
This would be great. This rivalry game needs to be played. This game will be prime time for whoever gets to show it. How could it not get great ratings? Hope this happens and they make it a yearly (or every 2 to 3 years) event. As a random aside, Texas - Texas A&M needs to happen too.

I doubt it's going to be played annually though. With only 4 slots on ND's schedule, I can't see them locking one in permanently to Michigan. Maybe we see a situation where they play 4 years on, 2 years off. That seems like a reasonable possibility.

Quote:Michigan will play at Notre Dame in the season opener on Sept. 1, 2018 and Notre Dame will play at Michigan on Oct. 26, 2019, it was announced Thursday.

This change makes the Wolverines’ 2018 schedule challenging with their three rivalry games – Notre Dame, Michigan State and Ohio State – all on the road. But resuming the Michigan-Notre Dame series had been gaining momentum because of the interest from both coaches.

Quote:Manuel had to make scheduling adjustments to accommodate adding the Irish. Michigan has cancelled the two-game series with Arkansas that was set to go in 2018-19, and a Big Ten home game against Rutgers that had been scheduled for Oct. 26, 2019 was shifted to Sept. 28 so make room for Notre Dame at Michigan Stadium.

Michigan will pay Arkansas $2 million to break the deal.

It's official.

RE: Michigan-Notre Dame series expected to be revived
My guess is the best we see is 4 years on, 2 years off. More likely is a 2 years on, 2 years off situation. Keeps them playing regularly enough to keep the rivalry a real rivalry, but keeps ND's schedule flexible enough. I think they can handle a situation where 2 years they have 9 games spoken for by ACC and protected rivals and 2 years where they have 8 games spoken for by the same. I say all this as a fan of the sport.

I think Pitt-Penn State plays out similarly, where we get maybe 4 to 6 matchups a decade going forward. Eventually UT-A&M will come back in such a manner as well.

I hope that it is only those two games then another forty year hiatus.

I could understand not wanting them on the schedule every year simply because it's tougher now for ND with the 5 ACC games and the 3 protected rivalries to keep schedule variety going. I think for the t-shirt fans and fans of the game who aren't Notre Dame fans seeing this at least a few times a decade is exciting. I could even make the argument that it being played regularly but not ever year would be much more exciting for everyone than every year or a "40 year hiatus". Makes it more marquee, more special, etc. when the bragging rights have a few years between meetings.
