MLB Draft
Is anyone else watching/following? Just my opinion but too many HS kids get drafted. No SBC players taken yet because of it. Heck I think more HS than college kids have gone in the first 3 (and supplemental) rounds.
Who do you think could go from your U? Even though I think someone from TXST might go I'm not holding my breath.

RE: MLB Draft
Selfish on my part but hoping a football recruit we signed won't get drafted. Can't blame him if he chooses MLB.

the thing is though, if he gets drafted low enough, most players won't, especially out of HS. Signing bonus once you get so low is all of 5 or 10k, and they go to single A with nothing guaranteed. Hopefully if he does get drafted, he will go super low and will wait it out.

RE: MLB Draft
My buddy's step son was drafted out of high school a few years back, and he's one of the upcoming stars in MLB.
It does happen, but I doubt as often as the draft makes it look.

Why do you say too many high school kids get drafted like it's a bad thing?

RE: MLB Draft
I do find it funny that people had issues with kids getting drafted too early for the NFL and NBA, causing them to put age restrictions on the draft, but don't bat an eye at the MLB drafting kids out of high school.

because most players never turn out to be anything and these HS kids have no education to fall back on.

^This and they don't allow HS kids to go directly to the NFL, do they? I find it a maturity thing. Not just emotionally but physically. Going to college allows them to grow into their adult body and not get burnt out too soon. (it's a personal opinion/preference)

False ... those players get their college paid for in the deals they are signing. Plus the early round guys, the ones who are going to go into the minors, are getting significant bonuses they gave save for their future.

Not always. It depends on how they word the agreement and the players have to perform to certain expectations when they do. Those bonuses aren't guaranteed.

HAHA ... really comparing baseball to football? There is also no minor leagues for the NFL. If they are good enough they should most definitely go straight to pro ball and not let three years of their body wear down in college. That argument is counterproductive. I don't see how going to college allows them to grow into their body more than playing MiLB.
Why waste prime growing years playing for a college team that doesn't have your best interest at heart, especially as a pitcher?

If a player is signing for enough to skip high school and they have an agent worth anything; they are getting college put into the deal. Those are not performance bonuses, they are signing bonuses.

Actually, I've heard a number of former signee's speak on this. It's typical if you don't go to college you don't get the money, and you don't get the money up front. I'm not saying it's impossible, but you really have to watch how this is structured.
The Cajuns make a point to have former minor and major league players speak on the specifics of signing pro contracts with prospective and draft eligible players so they are aware of all the "fine print" involved.

RE: MLB Draft
My buddy's son's contract had money put away in it, so that if he was a wash in baseball, he could return to school, and the Red Sox would pay fully for his schooling.
He spent 2-3 in the minors anyways....basically like having a college career without the studies.

Exactly!
Well, I don't think it was a bonus. It was money that would be dispensed to the school, if he didn't get another contract.

Right, if you don't go to college you don't get the money allocated for school; signing bonus still yours.
