“Most signature gathering efforts of this kind take six full months. We had just six weeks to complete our work,” Chargers owner Dean Spanos said in a statement. “The fact that we were able to collect more than 110,000 signatures in that short period of time demonstrates tremendous support in our community for a new, combined stadium-convention center expansion downtown.”

The signatures still need to be vetted and, as the San Diego Union-Tribune reported this week, uncertainty remains about whether the ballot measure will pass with a simple majority or if the team needs two-thirds of the vote. The two remaining candidates in the race for City Attorney both said they expect the plan will need two-thirds of the vote to pass when it comes up later this year.

Yeah, if everyone seems to agree that 2/3 is required, that means the Chargers' entire initiative campaign is a waste of time.

Some people have suspected that the Chargers were playing things out in SD only because they want to keep playing in SD until KroenkeWorld opens, and don't want to be known as a lame duck in SD for three full seasons. We don't know if that's their motivation, but pursuing an initiative that needs a 2/3 yes vote but has zero chance of getting 2/3 does support that suspicion.

The Chargers already have a deal with the Rams negotiated and agreed to. They took care of that early in 2016.

I hope they go for it anyway, even needing 2/3rds, and cram it down the anti-spending crowd's throats!

I used to live in MN and am a HUGE Vikings fan. I was actually rooting for the team to move instead of having the city/state pay for a new stadium.

I hope the state Supreme Court rules that 50% is all that's needed, right before the vote. Give the anti-spending crowd the least possible time to file an appeal. They won't be able to stop the vote, and it will pass with 5x% approval.

Once the shovels hit the dirt, there's nothing they can do. Except let the river of tears flow.
