Ten dollar cover on Beale
Effective immediately there will be a cover after ten to get on Beale. You will receive a seven dollar voucher that can be used at any Beale bar.

Sounds smart...priority should go to tourists spending money on Beale that boost the economy...not locals 'cruising'

I like it. Does it the right way in my opinion. Better than just charging a flat cover.

Legal implications will be interesting.

Can a public area be restricted to only citizens who can pay to enter?

if only one race had to pay the fee, I would agree...but that's not how it works.

Yeah, kinda like "no patrons allowed with saggy pants, oversized shirts, etc..."

no, it's nothing like that...and it's exactly what it sounds like...a fee to get on the street that you get back in vouchers. 07-coffee3

Hey, I'm all for it. Hell, it's something I thought should have been instituted 10+ years ago to keep ne'er-do-wells out.

Bottom line is the vast majority of the "target demographic" of rabble rousers which they want to keep out are black. So, the creation of the cover is to dissuade those people from coming onto Beale.

If you want to argue with that, just wait about four hours and see who is disagreeing with the decision to implement the cover and why.

ah, so it's not the policy that's racist...it's you...we already knew that.

so much white flight code in there...just go ahead and call em what you really want to and be done with it.

Fedex forum is owned by the city, should that be considered a public area, is it restricted to only citizens who can pay to enter?

Overton Park is a public space and I believe it closes at 9 or 10 on weekdays.

How is this going to work when the Tigers or Grizzlies have a game on Saturday nights? Are fans going to have to walk blocks out of the way to avoid crossing Beale Street? Closing off Beale when a game lets out seems like a mistake.

Maybe your ticket stub will get you on the street?

That is the EXACT point. I was using "code" just like the city leaders and Beale Street Merchants.

The objective of the cover is to keep out the riff-raff.

The question is: who comprises the "riff-raff?"

And is the cover meant to keep "them" away?

As the article states, it's only after 10pm on Saturday nights.

It's not a street.

Edit: Beale Street is listed as an "Historic District" so access can be controlled differently than a regular public thoroughfare.

01-wingedeagle you're the only one saying such things...the city is simply charging a fee to get on the street that you get back in vouchers.
