RE: New Stadium Thread
Like everyone I really wanted bigger... but what we're looking at is really really nice and all chair back. Count me as content and looking forward to the day when demand is there and we pull the trigger on the expansion.

If the final build was phase 1 I'd be jumping through the roof. But right now I've got this terrible taste in my mouth. It's a very nice rendering and I know it'll be light years better than what we have now. But looking at the long term, I'm very worried. My biggest is that there is a lack of vision, or a lack of confidence from our administration. I think ODU can go to big places, but this plan screams small time to me right now.

30k attendance would put us in the top 10 out of all G5 college football schools. Behind ECU, Central Florida, Fresno, Memphis, Boise, SD State, and South Florida.

22k attendance would put us in the top 25 out of all G5 schools.

It is not small time if you think of us as a program realistically (G5 school). It is small time if you have the illusion that we are a BCS school.

RE: New Stadium Thread
Disappointed for now as I was with most of you in the 30k range being the starting point, not the end game. I do love the renderings and think the stadium will be top notch once complete; however, it would be great if we could meet in the middle of Phase 1 and Phase 2. I think the North Endzone needs to get taken to Phase 2 immediatley. I also think that awesome looking video board needs to get in place during Phase 1. Doing both of those will really make the difference, and only leave the upper deck on the East side for Phase 2 (and some other changes to the West Side which I can quite pin point). Hopefully if Ballard gets the bid he can merge some of these ideas and provide the financing like he previously mentioned to keep the price in-line and student fees the same.

If this had been 22k and only like 5k chair backs or something I would have been really really mad. But 100% chair back (minus the end zone for now) and 100% chair back when expanded... that's something no other stadium that I'm aware of can say? All those 50k+ stadiums are all bleacher and just big.

The new renderings look a heck of a lost better than the Ballard ones, in my opinion.

100% agree. this isn't all the renderings either. If you look at the full presentation here you will be really happy.

A LOT more research went into those renderings. The Ballard one was done in short order.

That PDF has some really shocking information in it. This stadium is way more than just 22k seats.

And those schools with the big, bad, no chair back stadiums really have a tough time attracting recruits. 03-hissyfit I am not talking about P5's either. ECU plays a much higher brand of ball then we do and has bleachers. So does Memphis, Boise State, and the list goes on and on.

The stadium will be very nice. No doubt about it. But the players we recruit don't care about how comfortable our game day experience is. They want as many people yelling their name and being seen on TV as much as possible.

This stadium shouts "CAA" all day long.

RE: New Stadium Thread
I posted this on the other thread and I think it bears repeating.
The psychological effect of a 35k stadium would have been huge.
The "message" to potential conference suitors would have been huge.

However the realities are these:

Football attendance is down nationwide.
In some markets (Miami for example), advertising revenue from the local television viewer eclipses what that revenue would be if that same fan went to the stadium.
ODU season ticket demand is down, due to many factors, including the conference move, easy availability of gameday tickets, reseating backlash, and of course television.

The Cox legislation has changed the landscape in Virginia for the foreseeable future; and before blaming Kirk's JMU affiliation, the Dukes were negatively impacted most of all.

Structural costs and housing relocation impact and costs aside (which were by no means trivial); Powhatan may have become a nightmarish, maybe even impossible task due to the pushback from Larchmont homeowners. We already have the grandfathered zoning and use permits for Foreman.

There is no evidence whatsoever that any AAC offer is imminent. Indeed the B12 speculation is just that, especially since the 12 team conference championship game was eliminated. Even IF the AAC chose to expand (they might not even if poached) there are other programs besides ODU that would merit just as much consideration if not more, than ODU.

This stadium addresses our immediate needs, while providing for future expansion needs and at the same time gives us an otherwise first class venue and one that we still can afford.

IMO we should be happy and embrace it.
04-cheers

My only complaint is that the massive scoreboard isn't in Phase 1. We're stuck with our crappy board.

RE: New Stadium Thread
Thanks for pdf, C8.

Interesting that we are going to be well above average in patio suites (60) and club seats (1000). Both figures are ~double CSU and new collegiate stadiums.

Survey indicated a 27% attendance bump despite and average national attendance bump of 9%.

Goals included flexibilty to expand (HUGE) and maintaining current atmosphere.

I'm with you Giles! I'm looking forward to the new stadium, and future expansion to phase 2. Just wish endzone seating and scoreboard were part of phase 1. Better than a sharp stick in the eye.
