INside the Sun Belt Conference
Edit to make the first post informational. Am leaving this OP below it.
A consolidated thread for people to add news about your university that normally would go unnoticed. This are line items about former athletes, improvements your school is prepping for, random news articles, endowments, football practices, schedules & articles; whatever floats your boat to add that wouldn't get a lot of discussion on the main section of the forum. People can now see that there is something added without the clutter of 6-14 threads.

Current INsiders

App - T-Dog
CCU -
GS - TheEagleWay
GSU - panama
Idaho - NetVandal
NMSU - nmsuaggies
stAte -
TXST - CatMom
Troy - trojanbrutha
UALR - insideualr
ULL -
ULM -
USA -
UTA -

As you can see, numerous schools have no INsider and a couple have inactive ones. Also, 3 mods have taken this on but I know most were taken on before they became mods (including myself). If anyone wants to step up and take those, feel free. If someone wants to bow out, let us know. I'll update this OP as warranted.
Previously it was a fan nomination and "vote" thing but now we'll just ask if anyone wants to take it on.

Be aware that anyone can post here. These are just the "main" thread hosts

The players: Quarterback

By Drew Champlin

This is a first in a series as we lead into the start of fall practice, which begins Aug. 2. We’ll examine nearly every player on the roster and what role they may have this season. Players who haven’t reported for summer classes won’t be included, so there may be a few guys left out that will be here in time for practice.

Quarterback’s the easy one, since there’s not as many guys at the position.

SENIORS - None, though Jonathan Chandler could be moved here if there’s an emergency. He moved to wide receiver in 2008 after it was determined he wouldn’t be in the mix for a starting job.

JUNIORS - The frontrunner for the position looks to be fourth-year junior Jamie Hampton, who won the starting job prior to the 2008 season, but suffered a season-ending knee injury at FAU in the fifth game. Hampton hit 61.5 percent of his passes for 1,046 yards and nine touchdowns with eight interceptions. That’s when Levi Brown took over, and the rest is history. Hampton redshirted last season and is pretty much 100 percent with his knee. I think this offense has evolved into more of a dropback passing offense, and Hampton won’t be running as much. He’s also got to prove he can look past his first read, which he appeared to do so this spring. Remember two things: Hampton had just turned 19 prior to the 2008 season and it’s not like Brown lit it up as a true sophomore at Richmond, and the group of receivers this year is much deeper, more experienced and more talented than in 2008. If Hampton (pictured) wins the job, he’ll put up big numbers and can lead the Trojans to a championship.

This is a second in a series as we lead into the start of fall practice, which begins Aug. 2. We’ll examine nearly every player on the roster and what role they may have this season. Players who haven’t reported for summer classes won’t be included, so there may be a few guys left out that will be here in time for practice.

SENIORS - DuJuan Harris has gone through the ups and downs of a college career, following a 1,000-yard season as a sophomore with a disappointing junior season, though he was really good in the GMAC Bowl (topped 100 yards, scored 3 times). At his best, Harris is a threat to catch and run with the ball. He lost his starting job last year, but I think he’s poised to have a big year and get a chance to play pro ball.

JUNIORS - None

The players: Wide Receiver

July 18, 2010
By Drew Champlin

This is a third in a series as we lead into the start of fall practice, which begins Aug. 2. We’ll examine nearly every player on the roster and what role they may have this season. Players who haven’t reported for summer classes won’t be included, so there may be a few guys left out that will be here in time for practice.

We have a lot of receivers to look at, so if I missed someone, please let me know or ask about it. I can tell you there’s a lot of talent, proven talent, at this position, but not enough balls to go around. Don’t take that as a bad chemistry issue, just take it as a “some very good players won’t be putting up all-conference stats, but there’s enough playmaking ability on offense that can bring home another championship.“

SENIORS
***Jerrel Jernigan could be the best player in the league. There’s not much I need to tell you other than it’ll be time to check career school and conference record books throughout the season.

***Jason Bruce will start at the Z-receiver after being Jernigan’s backup as a JUCO transfer last year. He came on late in the year and really made some plays in the spring. If Jernigan got hurt, Bruce could step in and the offense wouldn’t miss too much. I’m that high on Bruce and think he’ll have a very good year.

***TeBiarus Gill comes back as the starter at the X-receiver. He was Troy’s second-leading receiver last year and is the big, physical presence to compliment the speedsters. He had a couple of games last year late where he suffered from the drops, but Gill’s as good as a receiver as anyone in the league.

***Austin Silvoy became a starter at the Y before he even played in a game and played well for the first 3-4 games of his career in 2007 before injuries sidetracked him. He was a backup the past two seasons, but played a lot. He goes into the fall as the starter but will probably split snaps with Brett Moncrief.

***Donnie Crosby should be the starter at tight end after seeing minimal action last year. He’s probably not the blocker that last year’s starter, Travis Boyd was, but probably a better receiver. The tight end normally takes the place of the Y (either Silvoy or Moncrief) in the offense, but Crosby should catch a few balls.

***Jonathan Chandler is the ultimate team guy who has a better chance to play at WR this year than he has in the past two years, but his snaps will probably be limited. I hope he scores a TD this year, though, because he’s a good guy who has stuck around and worked his butt off to contribute.

***Matt Stidham is listed as a senior on the TroyTrojans.com roster. I thought he was a junior, but may be wrong. He was held out of spring ball after shoulder surgery and he’s likely going to be Crosby’s backup.

Reaction to Troy being picked 2nd

July 19, 2010
By Drew Champlin

Though head coach Larry Blakeney doesn’t take his turn on Sun Belt Teleconference Days until 11:30 a.m. tomorrow, I did talk to him about the Trojans being picked second in the league in the coaches’ poll behind Middle Tennessee for a story in tomorrow’s paper.

Turns out, he thought his team should be lower. That’s usually the vibe I get from him before the season. I know he and his players aim high, but it’s better not to talk high so soon as to not set people up for disappointment. What I understand from coaches polls is that a head coach can’t vote for his team, so they just rank the other 8 teams.

“I just think other people have more people back than us, especially at quarterback and on the offensive and defensive lines,“ Blakeney said. “We’ve got three (starters) back on the offensive line, but no guys back on the defensive line. I like us in the middle of the pack if I was voting us.“

Trio of Trojans Named to All-Sun Belt Team
Troy picked second behind Middle Tennessee
7/19/2010 12:19:19 PM

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The four-time defending Sun Belt Conference champion Troy Trojans were picked by league coaches to be right in the hunt for another league crown in 2010.

The Trojans, who became the first Sun Belt team to complete a perfect 8-0 record in league play in 2009, were picked to finish second in 2010, receiving 73 total points, including three first place votes, in a polling of the leagues nine head coaches.

Middle Tennessee picked up 75 total points in the voting, including five first place votes.

The Trojans were also represented on the preseason All-Conference team by a pair of seniors and one sophomore. The preseason team was voted on by the head coaches as well as media representative from each school.

Sun Belt Media Days: Trojans relying on speed

By Drew Champlin
Published: July 20, 2010

While questions remain about Troy’s ability to replace eight starters on defense, there’s one thing head coach Larry Blakeney’s team has that he feels good about.

Speed.

The Trojans must replace six of seven starters in the front seven, but the one returning starter — Daniel Sheffield — is a linebacker who came to Troy as a safety and can run. The top three safeties — Willard Ross, Barry Valcin and Bryant McKissic — all have shown they can fly to the football.

“The one ingredient we do have is speed, and that cures a lot of ills,” Blakeney said Tuesday during the Sun Belt Media Days teleconference.

RE: INside The Walls of Troy
The players: Offensive line

July 22, 2010
By Drew Champlin

We’re back with the fourth in a series of position previews. As previously noted, we’ll get to all of the scholarship players and walk-ons in the rotation. This is a big group of guys, so if I’ve missed a player or have eligibility wrong, please let me know.

SENIORS
***Coaches didn’t know who Tyler Clark was until about a month before the fall camp in 2007 started. Halfway into that year, he was a walk-on starter at left guard. Now, he might be the best lineman in the Sun Belt and makes the move to center. This is up for debate, but he could be the player Troy can least afford to lose.

***Tyler Graves came to Troy as a junior college transfer and played on the right side of the line. This year, he’ll start at left guard and should be solid there. Graves also worked at center and if Clark goes down, he could slide there.

***Nate Newland saw a little bit of action last year at right tackle and played a lot there this spring. He’s listed as a backup at left tackle, but coaches determine their offensive line rotation order by how good a player is. So, if Newland is the No. 6 lineman, he’d be the first off the bench and they’d rotate players accordingly. I believe Newland will be in that 6-7 range as his versatility allows him to play all tackle and guard spots.

Troy adds defensive line depth

By Drew Champlin
Published: July 22, 2010

So, portions of the 2010 media guide came out on TroyTrojans.com, and a few names stuck out at me. I called sports information director Ricky Hazel to check on them.

***Defensive tackle Jeremy Elder is already in school. He’s listed as a 6-foot-4, 275-pound junior from College Park, Ga. by way of Georgia Military. Elder started his career at Alabama, but ran into some legal trouble (armed robbery) two years ago. That link was the last I could find on him, but he’s enrolled at Troy.

***Defensive end Scardino Daniels is listed at 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds from Pearl River Community College. Daniels should be a junior. No idea how good he’ll be, but bigger schools have recruited him in the past. He’s got to be eligible, though, and he’s not in school yet. The plan is for him to be here this fall.

The players: Defensive line

By Drew Champlin
Published: July 24, 2010

This is a fifth in a series of position previews looking at the scholarship guys (or walk-ons who could have a role) on the 2010 roster. Defensive line is a deep position, so please let me know if I’ve overlooked someone (as I had on the OL), or if I have the eligibility wrong.

SENIORS
***I really think Mario Addison can be an all-conference player. He’s faster than Lang and Sheffield, running close to a 4.5 from the defensive end spot, but he’s just had to wait his turn. I expect a big year out of him.

***Emmanuel Dudley could play a lot at one defensive tackle spot. He’s listed as a senior on the roster, but played 3 games last year as a junior before not playing any more and they’re expected to apply for a medical redshirt for Dudley.

***Riley Flowers might start this year. He’s listed as a starter heading into fall camp. He’s a big body. He’ll battle Dudley in one spot, more than likely. He’s also listed as a senior but look at Dudley’s description and the same eligibility applies to him.

Trojans Have Many Holes To Fill
Team set to report on Friday
Troy Media Relations
7/26/2010 2:47:35 PM

In the spring of 1996, Trojans football coach Larry Blakeney was worried. Worried sick.

The 1995 Trojans had gone through an undefeated regular season, but had lost 25 seniors who were all major contributors to the success of that team. Entering the spring, Blakeney and the coaching staff was not sure what might lie ahead.

“That may have been the best football team we’ve had, and we were worried sick going into the spring,” Blakeney said as he opens his 20th spring practice as the Trojans head coach. “Guys like Stan Davis came in and a bunch of other players grew up and over-achieved, and that is what we need this year. I think we lost 25 seniors off the 1995 team and came back in 1996 and beat everyone we could beat before losing to Montana in the semifinals.”

The 2010 Trojans won’t have to replace 25 seniors, but there are major holes to fill for the four-time defending Sun Belt Conference champions.

The players: Linebacker

July 27, 2010
By Drew Champlin

We’re almost to the end. Let’s take a look at the scholarship or walk-on linebackers expected to have a role this year. If there’s a missing name or messed up eligibility, let me know

SENIORS

***The long, lean Daniel Sheffield made the move from safety to linebacker prior to last season and started, but split time with David McDowell at the nickel/SAM spot. Sheffield’s one of the few experienced players returning and despite missing spring after shoulder surgery, will be counted on to have a productive season. He was pretty productive last year, but was a bit overshadowed by the other star linebackers.

Troy adds 3-star linebacker to fall class

July 28, 2010
By Drew Champlin

Troy has added one last piece of the puzzle to its 2010 class.

Mark Wilson Jr., a linebacker from Tallahassee, Fla., was a late qualifier and will play at Troy. Wilson, who prepped at Lincoln High, was a teammate of current Trojan linebacker Xavier Lamb in high school.

Wilson said he is 6-foot-1 and 230 pounds and will report Friday. The rivals.com and scout.com 3-star recruit will start out at the weakside linebacker spot, but could also play in the middle.

Wilson signed with Illinois in February, but qualified with a 19 on his ACT.

Troy's Clark switches position, number

The Associated Press • July 30, 2010

TROY — Troy offensive lineman Tyler Clark will open Troy's season with a new position and a new number.

The Troy offensive lineman moves from left guard to center for his senior season. Clark will wear No. 54 in the Sept. 4 opener against Bowling Green in honor of a close friend who died in the spring.

The players: Defensive back

August 01, 2010
By Drew Champlin

What you’ve all been waiting for. We’ll look at guys on scholarship and see where they stand this year. If there’s a guy missing, please let me know

SENIORS

***Willard Ross is expected to be the starter at free safety and should be productive. He started twice last year (ULL, GMAC Bowl).

***Barry Valcin enters as the starter at strong safety, which he played a little bit at the end of last year after starting most of the year at corner. Two things of note: (1) He should get another year of eligibility after this season for a medical redshirt in JUCO and (2) Jeremy Rowell absolutely loves him as a safety

***Bryant McKissic has looked good when healthy and when he’s had chances. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been much over his career, but he’s back from missing the spring with shoulder surgery. Outside chance he’ll start - as he did in the GMAC Bowl and had an interception - but he’s probably Valcin’s backup.

***Sam Sellers seems like he’s been here forever, but he’ll be a guy on special teams and a backup at nickel.
