CBS: Sun Belt in 2018 to become the final FBS conference to host a league title game
From the article:

Following in the footsteps of the Big 12, which late last week announced it will welcome back its title game beginning in 2017, the Sun Belt will become the second league to take advantage of a recent NCAA decision that allows all leagues -- even those with fewer than 12 members and without two six-team divisions -- to hold championship games.

Like the Big 12, which last week at its spring meetings tabled expansion of its league, the Sun Belt will consist of 10 teams in 2018.

The Sun Belt currently has 11 members but will be dropping football-only members Idaho and New Mexico State following the 2017 season. Idaho has chosen to drop down to FCS, while New Mexico State's fate remains undecided. The conference will add Coastal Carolina, which is moving up from FCS to FBS, in 2018, giving it 10 teams once again.

Not sure I agree with this one.

It's not like the Sun Belt needs equal perception to the P5, in the eyes of the selection committee. And this is just going to be one more loss for one of its two best teams, possibly knocking it further down the bowl chain.

Short answer:Money.

Even if the game only brings in $1 million, that's 100,000 per team or a little less if the league takes a cut. And even for a G5, a championship game should bring in something.

Maize,

If you're saying that you don't think any more FCS teams will be invited by the current G5 leagues, I would agree with that. There really doesn't seem to be any incentive to have more than 10 members, in my opinion.

Well, there is another thing ... a technicality, really. But I don't want to derail the thread discussing it!

They need equal perception to the G5 conferences, not the P5.

The big thing now about the SB and the Big 12 holding a CCG is that it will make the CCG of the SB and other conferences more valuable. Now the last Friday/Saturday of CCG weekend there will be only 10 football games. There won't be 10 other games played of miscellaneous teams from the Big 12 and Sun Belt.

If i remember right they have two options divisions or nine game schedule.

Divisions makes more sense with the choice of seven or eight conference games .
I would go with seven conference games giving the schools more options and opportunities for OOC wins. The WAC and SBC had really good years with seven game schedules recently.

I guess 2018 is as early as possible wouldn't want NMSU or Idaho winning the initial game.
ULL should be off probation and Coastal only a year away from bowl eligibility.
The current TV deal is for a million the championship game won't bring a million .
Anyone care to guess ESPN2 or ESPN3 ? for how much?

BYU and Notre Dame should start playing on that weekend every year.

Won't happen since ND won't be playing BYU for quite some time....if ever.

The funbelt is gonna come out looking pretty good. Distinct southeastern region, good rivalries, nice growing regional universities. Lotsa upside. Kinda MAC ish.
