Finishing undefeated in OOC (regardless of level of play of your opponents) gives you a chance at a seed and a bye week.

You scheduled to make the playoffs. We all know this to be true and I am happy to hear Kevin White admit it.

I know I'm late to this, but +100000

I think there's a difference of opinion as to whether the goal should be 'competing' within the regular season, or positioning yourself for 'competing' as far into the playoffs as possible.

Personally, it's not close for me. At least as long as we're FCS, you play for championships. Feeling decent about the overall level of competition within conference (for fan engagement), the ends 100% justify the means for playing OOC cupcakes.

Yep, while it would be nice to see stronger opponents sometimes, this is how you maximize your chances at hosting and winning in the playoffs.

The committee has shown they don't really respect SoS as much as they should (see the high seeds awarded the SLC), and NDSU has followed a similar OOC scheduling philosophy for years (one FBS or strong FCS and two cupcakes). Every win improves your odds for a high seed (though an FBS loss doesn't tend to hurt much). In the playoffs home field advantage is huge, its contributed to NDSU's success, and previously helped other schools like Montana and Marshall during their peak.

Murderer's row there.

Citadel knocked off Bama's conference mate SC.

How can we get on that schedule? Win or lose, a Bama game would be an epic road trip! On second thought, half the SEC would be calling HCMH if we won.

Bama is the easiest game in the country to get on your OOC schedule. They are often the last minute signing teams who are willing to come to Tuscaloosa

Let's ******* do this thing

And they've maintained at least 6 home games every season. JMU is doing 5 home games about once every 3 seasons (2011, 2014, 2018).

12 games allowed I think 3 out of every 11 years. I believe the pattern is back to back 12 game seasons allowed, then 4 seasons of 11 games, then a season of 12 allowed, then then 4 seasons of 11 games, repeat. I believe the 12 game seasons allowed were 2002, 2003, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2019..I know 2008 JMU only scheduled 11...

It shouldn't be that difficult to:
-maintain 6 home games every season as NDSU does.
-play a quality I-AA as part of a home and home every season.
-at least 1 cupcake every season,
-a I-A close to 2/3 of seasons if you can continue to find ones willing to schedule.

11 game seasons:
Season 1: 6 home games. OOC: @ I-A, home vs quality I-AA, home vs cupcake
Season 2: 6 home games. OOC: @ quality I-AA, home vs cupcake, home vs cupcake
Repeat.

12 game seasons:
6 home games: @ I-A, @ quality I-AA, home vs cupcake, home vs cupcake
or
7 home games: @ I-A, home vs quality I-AA, home vs cupcake, home vs cupcake.

Now NDSU went from playing a I-A every season after they moved up to a 5 season stretch 2015-2019 only 1 (@ Iowa 2016). Do have @ Oregon 2020. This I believe is due to difficulty finding even P5 willing to play them. This happens after winning 6 straight over I-A/5 straight over P-5. Apparently JMU is starting to face this same problem to a lesser extent.

I guess it depends on your definition of 'isn't really any big deal.'

Following 8 home games during the 2016 season, JMU reported in $2,567k in ticket sales ($321k per game) and $1,522k in gameday expenses ($190k per game). JMU is making $130.6k per home game. Using 2015 season, it is $137.5k per game.

Even adding in parking/novelty/concessions at ($31k per game) and royalty/ads ($8k per game) revenue, which shouldn’t be considered for various reason, JMU is netting about $170k per home game.

JMU will make $425k from NC State in 2018, $550 from WVU in 2019 and $500 from UNC in 2020.

$490k average (minus travel) seems much bigger than $130k.

This is one area where having an accountant for a Athletic Director pays dividends. I absolutely trust that making $400K, and often more, is financially the better play over any home game including the big three, HC, FW, and First Home Game. Though, those three probably come very close to being about the same.

Travel is a very large expense, so your sugestion that $490k is mostly profit is off-base. Plus. if you’re going to use past income posted by JMU home games, you must use past payouts to make a fair comparison. Has JMU ever been paid more than $400k before next year? I recall SMU paid JMU about $400k, but did Akron or ECU do the same? I’d guesstimate that the real difference in income from an away game vs. playing at BFS is less than $150k.

Finally, home games mean a great deal more to the local economy than just tickets sold and concessions. Ask any H’Burg merchant whether they’d like another home game vs. an away game. Seems to me the advantages of playing an extra home game always > than an away game.

The average season attendance average is skewed downward by playoff games. Ex this past season's attendance.
ETSU: 24722
NSU: 23118
Maine: 25330
VU: 25,993
UNH: 25298
RU: 24586

Playoff:
SBU: 16,449
Weber: 13,490
SDSU: 16528
Avg 15,489

Regular season avg 24,841
Season avg 21,723

So that 170k net profit per home game you cited for 2016 is probably closer to 200k for regular season games..

490k avg minus travel for the next 3 payday games, but the historical avg for payouts have been a lot lower than that.

Plus what LH alluded to with financial impact on the local community. One of the reasons I've seen cited before by fans of both NDSU and Montana for always doing at least 6 regular season home games is financial impact on the local community.

Finally, home games mean a great deal more to the local economy than just tickets sold and concessions. Ask any H’Burg merchant whether they’d like another home game vs. an away game. Seems to me the advantages of playing an extra home game always > than an away game.

Again, depends on your definition of very large. Second, I never said it was mostly profit.

Third, why not use future home games, we are talking about future scheduling, correct? I looked into 2014 and pulled up JB’s comments following the EKU/Liberty playoff bids, historical results remain consistent for the past ~5 years. I didn’t feel the need to write a thesis to present all that.
Your ‘guesstimate’ is just that, pulling a number out of a hat, with no basis in reality. In order for the difference to be $150k as you suggest, travel would have to cost us $200-250k. That simply isn’t based in reality when you consider the upcoming FBS opponents.

I’m not arguing of the impact of a home game from a team morale, win/loss, local economy basis. I stated that it depends on your definition of 'isn't really any big deal’ when looking at the revenue differences between away FBS vs home FCS. You presented absolutely nothing factual that contradicts what I first said or supports your initial opinion.

NDSU has scheduled 6 home games pretty consistently. Montana and Delaware did it too, when they were at the top.

I wish the DNR would do a piece on what we were making ($-wise) when filling the old stadium vs what we make filling the new stadium. I realize we now have the need for more manpower and have larger overhead, but are also now having larger crowds showing up to spend money.

I don't know for certain, but get the feeling from stories I've read in the past, that we are not maximizing revenue per home game. Maybe we need to go back to students running the concessions and the Elks Lodge members handling the ushering.

pretty sure Duke Club revenue has more than doubled since the new stadium has opened.

that is where the real money comes from. not from gameday operations. even if penny pinching.

I realize, and am pleased, that the Duke Club $ has doubled since the stadium renovation. I'm more interested in simple home game day profit. The Duke Club $ will already be in the bank whether we play 5 or 6 home games. I'm curious whether playing the home game, ( of a home and home series w/ a high profile FCS team) could generate the same profit as playing an average payout FBS game. Do we reach a point of diminishing returns with a 7th home game? Would we consider raising the season tix prices to accommodate an extra home game?

Me too. I think the numbers would be close (as long as JMU is at the FCS level), say $200-250k for the home game vs. $400k for the FBS game.
It's a matter of taste I suppose, but I'd rather play a top FCS team at BFS than a FBS game.

If those are the $$ figures I would not say that was close......close would be FCS level at home generates @350-375K vs 400k for an FBS game. The spit-shot numbers you threw out was a $150K-$200K difference not even close.

(1) Schedule 6 home games AND NEVER 5 in a 12 game season. If Kevin/JB's job is to get us into the playoffs, guess what helps? Home games.
(2) Don't schedule an away game in a 1-for-1 deal with a team you can beat by 50+ points. It is just embarrassing to even play that away game.
(3) Don't have 3 of the first 4 weeks away. At the least, it should definitely be a rarity and not recur every 5 years. And it certainly shouldn't be due to (2).
(4) Excluding the FBS payday, schedule at least one OOC teams that should finish at least.500 for the season. I understand this is tougher due to ups and downs of programs (I mean, a few loud ones on here screamed ETSU was a quality opponent), but we know what we are getting from CCSU/Robert Morris/Morehead.

I think one of the reasons JMU agreed to the home-home with NSU is JMU wanted to play a game in the 757-tidewater region and this season that is the only time we will be down that way with W&M at home. And let's face Williamsburg is not exact Norfolk-VaBeach either. I am sure JMU would absolutely LOVE to play a road FBS game at ODU....but ODU ain't gonna sign up for that. So what are then the available options to play a game in Tidewater?

THIS....it is not even close....and football revenue pays for a lot of other sports that generate zero revenue....so it is vital to the budget.

RE: Future FB Schedule (currently 2018-2020)
Going back to my earlier post on money brought in by selling out Bridgeforth (tix, concessions & parking), I still maintain that 170-200k per game net profit seems low for a 25k stadium. I'd have to see the numbers breakdown of a gameday at Bridgeforth in comparison to G5 & P5 stadiums though to make an accurate assessment though.

Remember, we do our accounting different than most schools. We probably add stadium debt, light bills, etc. on our gameday expense sheet. I agree, a packed 25k stadium should net more.

Keep in mind JMU football tickets are at a really affordable price point for single game and season tickets. Sure JMU could up the revenue very easily on paper by upping ticket prices across the board......but would probably yield about the same revenue as less tickets would be sold. And god forbid they raise ticket prices b/c this board would absolutely blow-up.
