Big 12 to add Championship Game beginning in 2017
According to Brett McMurphy, the Big 12 will add title game in 2017 & league likely will split into two 5-team divisions & continue round-robin format

For the quotes regarding the CCG in the article. It sounds like expansion is on the table, especially regarding the coaches comments.

Fox will televise the Big 12 CCG in years when ESPN has the Pac-12 CCG, and vice versa.

Quote:David Ubben

Bowlsby said FOX and ESPN will alternate years on showing the Big 12 title game. ESPN will have even years. FOX in odd years.

A repeat of the season finale would be a disaster. It will be interesting to see how this develops. Will the "divisions" have something to do with the selection process?

Not surprising. What is surprising is it took them this long to finally do it.

How I would break up the divisions. You're playing everyone anyway but try to balance it a bit.

Division A: texas, Tech, OSU, KU, ISU

Division B: OU, TCU, Baylor, WVU, KSU

The bigger news is that the gap between SEC/B1G is not as big as originally thought as the average was $30.4M per school

I would guess they will put OU and Texas in different divisions.
Probably the old Big 8 members in one division and the old SWC schools in the other division with West Virginia.

OU
OSU
KSU
KU
Iowa State

VS

Texas
TCU
TECH
Baylor
West Virginia

That at least would prevent an OU-OSU rematch one week later. Also two power teams in each division. OU and OSU in one... Texas and TCU in the other. Baylor will soon drop down.

Since they are playing a round robin it does really matter much.

So, they will play a round robin playing each other in the regular season, and then a rematch for the conference championship. What does that gives you? A disaster as nobody wants to see a rematch. It was a big disaster when the BCS put Alabama back in the title game in a rematch against LSU. That will lose money, not bring in more without expanding.

I'd like the divisions to be like this:

A:
Texas
Texas Tech
Iowa State
Kansas State
West Virginia

B:
Oklahoma
TCU
Oklahoma State
Kansas
Baylor

Well....

1) Texas will not give up the LHN.

2) The Big 12 will not have a conference network.

Where does that leave expansion for the Big 12? Dead ?

There is no requirement to split into divisions if they are playing round Robin so I would guess the only good reason to still go with 5-team divisions is to guarantee 2 teams from different states to help tv ratings.

So geographic divisions make the most sense

South
Tex, TT, Bay, TCU, WV

North
OK, OkSt, Kan, KanSt, IowaSt

I do not consider that balanced. OU, TCU and Baylor are currently the top programs. Of course Baylor is gonna drop after the currents recruits are gone. WVU and KSU are good programs year in and out.

KU and Iowa State are the two weakest links and Tech is not as tough as KSU or WVU.

That's easy: make sure the last week of regular season features only intra-division matches. This also sets up the possibility of de facto CSFG's in each division. This is what the Big Ten has done the last two season, and scheduled for this season -- with the exception of Indiana-Purdue. But that one isn't likely to be a Big Ten CCG rematch!

So if that last week is a "rivalries" weekend, you could have:

OU - OK St
KU - KS ST
TCU - Baylor
Texas - Tech

Iowa St - WV

and that gives divisions of:

Iowa St, KU, KS St, OU, OK St
TCU, Baylor, TX, Tech, WV

Touche.....since we rarely agree on anything, this is significant.

Traditional Network was DOA even with expansion. Who would be the partner?
ESPN and Fox are too busy with other properties. Can you do some non traditional stuff. Ditch round robin to hope to avoid CCG rematch, with expansion you can do that. TV partners onboard with expansion?

Just for fun, I was looking at the historic rivalries of WV and Iowa St, to see if there was a chance to add anyone even a bit obscure to the B12 to help with the "rivalries week".

It's probably obvious that there aren't any possibilities.

WV rivals are all either in the ACC or Big Ten.

And here's a kicker: Missouri and Nebraska leaving caused six of the oldest rivalries in college football to be cancelled. So none for Iowa St, either.

Spoken like a true Texan. You put Texas in a division with most of the weakest teams. OU, TCU, OSU and Baylor have been the four best teams in the conference in recent years

When WVU joined they tried to spin WVU and Iowa St as new rivals but it just doesn't work. I'd rather try on making KU our rival because of basketball and we are the most even for football even though we are still better currently.

I beleive they still have to have two divisions, as the rule is that division champions have to play each other. The round robin exception was to not have to have 12 teams, not a workaround divisions.
