Actually, I believe that's exactly what happened, Tiki Owl!

Lots of demand in the city for musical theater, and I suspect it could be well used for that...

I guess "Music School Expansion" would have been a better title than "Opera House".

That's actually what the charter says. We can now 'borrow' from the endowment (for promises not yet paid, i.e. multi-year fund pledges) but that's it. Arguably you CAN use the 'earnings' from the endowment (on an annual basis) but not the corpus

People told us to be quiet at the 2011 Purdue game. Really. We were just cheering, and not using any offensive language. It was truly amazing. At that moment, I was kind of sad that I had to call those people fellow alumni. (And I absolutely promise that what we were doing was quite tame and family friendly, even by Rice standards.)

Maybe they've just gotten too used to the west side being their little country club after all of these years. And maybe that's why nobody with clout sees properly addressing the football situation as absolutely imperative. Maybe.
