While this "All-Star" game is fun, it is pointless.

Let's just hope there are no injuries.

RE: 2016 Michigan East-West All-Star game
The purpose of the All-Star game is to promote HS Football in Michigan.

When it began and was held at MSU in August just prior to start of HS practice and some of the state's top players actually played, it probably accomplished that.

I coached in the '93 game and had several players participate over the years.

It was a fun week, great experience.

But times have changed.

My concern is the kids are not in "football shape" when this game is played. They are more susceptible to injury then they would be during the regular season.

Maybe they've been running track, playing baseball, or working the weight room, but chances are they have not prepared properly to randomly compete in a "hitting" environment against athletes of equal caliber.

Football is a collision sport. Why take a chance with a game like this?!

All-Stars only play one way and they alternate at their positions so each kids' actual playing time is a half or less.

But injury potential is still there.

I don't remember any major injuries in East-West games except for one coach who got run over on the sideline and completely tore up his knee.

Well, I suppose someone could get seriously hurt just stepping out of bed or mowing the lawn.

Let's hope they have fun, make some new friends, and stay healthy.

04-cheers

RE: 2016 Michigan East-West All-Star game
Summer football camps and early enrollment have cut deeply into top tier players availability for these games. Ohio was hit hard in this regard. A lot of big names missing from the East and West rosters. Sign of the times.
