End of an era...I listened to George when I was going to U of M over 30 years ago.

I hope he enjoys what time he has left.

Praying for George. He has the insidious pulmonary fibrosis disease.

I did not always agree with George, but he is undoubtedly a legend in Memphis radio.

Wolo said that with the demise a few years ago of the Paul Harvey show, the only longer-running radio program in the USA is the Grand Ole Opry. Now I'm not 100% sure that Wolo is accurate here, based on his track record, but George has definitely made his mark.

Congratulations, George! Go and enjoy your family and take care of yourself.

Congratulations to George for a long and storied career.

Praying that the rest of his time is comfortable and peaceful and that he can enjoy many more happy memories with his family.

God Speed, George.

Wasn't a big fan of George but he is undoubtedly a sports radio legend in this city. I wish him well.

I lost my wife with the same illness about four month ago. She struggled with it for about five years. I can certainly relate to what he is going through.

GL did tell Pastner at the last home game it may be his last. Since his shows changed time slots I haven't been able to listen. How did he feel about Josh's situation?

My father in law changed my drive time habits by telling me about "this sports show".

Listened to George for years and would still listen from Dallas and beyond via internet now and then if I had time. Mostly when I was traveling and had time to waste in a hotel.

I wanna play.

Enjoyed George in the 80's and 90's. Not so much over the past 15 years or so. Probably should have retired years ago, but who am I to say.

Hate that he has the illness. How old is he?

I too grew up listening to George Lapides. I am in my mid 40's now and started listening to him as a teenager. George is in his late 70's (78, I believe). I sure hope what years he has left he will be able to spend them with family and with some quality of life. He is a true legend and the airwaves will never be the same here in Memphis.

I listened to George in the 90's for a bit. Loved the sports trivia. I think the only reason I stopped listening was that I moved north to Kentucky in 2000. Good times.

I guess that makes a couple of shows I miss...Dennis Phillipi & Tony Brooks "And boy does my stomach hurt"...from WFSZ sports radio for the fans. Liked that station so much...I interviewed and got a job with them.

I was THRILLED when I was hired by them. My dad...who was dying from leukemia was super pumped for me.
The next day that I show up for work...they are going off the air. Thanks a @(#(@in lot John Rainey!

Actually it was pretty well known.

All you had to do was listen to him.

He loved to drop names.

Never was a friend of the university. Wish he would have retired when the Press Scimitar folded. Still, I hate to heard of his health problems. Wish him a pleasant retirement.
