Would expanded ACC baseball tourny help UNC get to NCAA?
UNC wasn't playing well at the end of the season. They didn't make the ACC or the NCAA tournament. However, depending on the poll, they did finish between 20-25. Would going 1-3 in the ACC tournament have been enough to get them in the NCAA?
How would you format the tournament to include more teams?

I don't know how you could format a tournament for additional teams. We already run from Tuesday -Sunday so adding additional teams means playing on Monday after ending the regular season on Saturday. Most years the championship game teams already have their pitching running on fumes so the additional games are only going to exacerbate that problem.

If Carolina couldn't get into the NCAA without playing in the ACCT, I don't see how adding a few more losses to their record is going to help. And if they don't add losses to their record, then they add them to some other team's record, potentially knocking them out of the NCAA. What is gained (compared to what is lost)?
While in theory, they aren't supposed to do this, I can't help but suspect the selection committee just felt that 10 teams from the ACC was enough, and some deserving team from another conference should get a chance ahead of the 11th place team from the ACC. I can live with that.

I don't care if it is the ACC, SEC, Big 10, PAC, Big 12 or any other conference if you don't finish in the top 50% of your conference why in the hell do you deserve to be in a championship tournament anywhere? I feel the same way about basketball, softball, soccer, or any other sport.
At least individual achievement is acknowledged in track & field and swimming & diving. But then they have meets, and not tournaments.
The only thing being served by the SEC or ACC having more than 7 schools each in the tournament is revenue for venues. If you can find a second large school with a decent following and add them to a nearby regional you can usually count on decent attendance. That is the only reason the tournament field is 64 strong and the biggest reason that conferences with larger schools get so many in.
A truer way to decide the champion for baseball would be to invite the top 2 to 4 schools from each conference, seed them, and have best two of 3 series until we had a champion.
The way we do it now, like with basketball, it is designed to proclaim someone the best, but not necessarily based upon merit or the body of their work during the season. It really is just an event, and not a true championship per se.

Agreed. This is, in fact, my basic reason for wanting conference champs in the CFB playoffs. I don't mind at-large teams after all P5 champs are in, but no non-champs should jump a major conference champ IMO... In any sport.

I don't think they will ever do away with the CWS in Omaha, or even change its format much. But if you put a cap of 3-4 teams per conference, you could have a 32 team field with one best of 3 series for each team in each of the first two weeks to determine the Omaha 8 team field. That way, every team in Omaha can come in with fresh arms.
And chances are the field would look very much like the one we would get with the current format.

While I'm pleased GT got in the field, and that the ACC had 10 teams invited, I'd be fine with .500 conference record rule in baseball and basketball.
I think it would make the regular season more exciting in any sport that has taken under .500 conference teams in the past. I'm still ok with the auto-qualifier if you win the tournament.

Considering that there's seven scheduled days between the last super regional and the first games in Omaha getting there with fresh arms isn't that much of a problem. Weather could shorten that but there shouldn't be any teams, barring injury, that arrive in Omaha with a depleted pitching staff.

RE: Would expanded ACC baseball tourny help UNC get to NCAA?
I don't think it is a question of adding losses. Georgia Tech and UNC had very similar records. UNC was ranked higher, didn't get in the ACC or NCAA tournament. GT won their play-in game then went 0-3 in pool play but made the NCAA tournament. Clearly the selection committee placed a lot of emphasis on making the ACC tournament.
I agree with Kap, I don't see how to format the ACC tournament to accommodate more teams.
I disagree with the 50% rule. The SEC has been arguing for years that their conference football is so tough that their ?? team deserves better bowls than the #2 or #3 team in other conferences.
