RE: Texas reassigns legendary baseball coach Augie Garrido after 20 seasons
Quote:The position Garrido has held since leaving Cal State Fullerton after the 1996 season will command attention from high-end coaches, including, perhaps, Florida’s Kevin O’Sullivan, TCU’s Jim Schlossnagle and Vanderbilt’s Tim Corbin. David Pierce, a Houston native who has guided Tulane to the brink of the top 10 this year, also could get a look. Texas will be ushering in only its third new coach since Cliff Gustafson took over in 1968.

A winning tradition, high-level facilities and ardent fan support make UT a top-five job and should ease the challenge faced by Perrin in his first coaching search. A personal injury lawyer, Perrin took the job last September without any previous experience in athletic administration.

Additionally, Perrin will be able to dangle a competitive salary. After all, Garrido wasn’t just the game’s winningest coach, he is also believed to have had the highest annual salary of more than $1 million.

Interesting that Kyle Peterson commented that "this was absolutely the wrong time" to fire Augie. So you wait around for a month after the disappointing season(s) and then fire him?

I think he meant (although he didn't actually say anything about what he'd have preferred) that you wait until tomorrow, so the bracket selections get undivided/undiluted media coverage.

I think it is only 5 coaches at UT in about a century. Disch and Faulk had long tenures before Guf.

The other shoe dropped when Texas did not make the NCAAs. Why wait around when it was obvious that they were not keeping him.

My guess is that the Texas A.D. had no idea there was a bracket selection going on today.

On the other hand, Wayne could now hire Augie as an assistant coach. I'm thinking bunting coach...

It's the only way the horns could get their name mentioned today.

How big a raise are we going to have to give Wayne to keep him from taking the job?

Garrido's dismissal is making college baseball coaches rich. Apparently, TCU, Louisville and Florida's coaches aren't jumping ship.

I was thinking about this happening a couple days ago . Some of you would know, but I understand that the OG is in the 400K range?
. Reaffirms that the BOT will have to have a firm commitment to keep baseball, and hopefully, elevate MBB , to a high level . Dealing w whatever cost impediments, both to schoolies, and wages , is a must.

This reminds me of TAMU's search several years ago. I don't think any of those raises are enough to take them off the boards for Texas, though.

It will be interesting to see if this changes momentum for increasing scholarships, as that could definitely benefit Rice.

I'm more concerned for what it means we would have to pay, say, to get a Pearce equivalent in a couple of years.

Andy Lopez's final salary at Arizona was $370K and Johnson's at Nevada before replacing Lopez was $117K.

Not sure Rice is in the same position as a large public university in finding a coach. they have a much larger built-in recruiting base, where as we have a pittance of alumni, even vis-a-vis TCU, much less UH, A&M , UT and Tech We need someone who can keep the Texas recruiting pipeline open so it seems to me we need someone familiar w the in-state recruits, but also a enough presence to pull it off. i must say that so far I like JK's hires, and he seems to plan ahead, so lets hope this hire is as good as the MBB and WBB appear to be.
Everybody appears to like Pearce, but I would guess that unless he has emotional attachment to Rice, he would not leave Tulane for here, but that's just a guess
