Precisely. It took a great play by Southern Miss. Great game, really.

Darn. I know some here didn't care much but I wanted the streak to continue pretty badly. Hopefully we can make up for it ending by a good run in the NCAAs.

Disagree, Tiki. Yes, Lewis is an average runner, but with Hunter up next (who had had one bad AB after another today, and going against a top RHP), I think I would have sent him home as well. There's always the chance of a throw up the baseline or in the dirt. The bottomline, Robinson outplayed Hunter defensively today, blocking every ball but one in the dirt; whereas Hunter allowed the two wild pitches. One could argue that the game was lost in the bottom of the 2nd when we only scored one run. Lewis had a truly forgettable AB-- first missing on two bunt attempts and then swinging (and striking out) on what would have been Ball 4. Then Hunter tried to pull a ball on the outside corner rather than going the opposite way with the ball and, consequently, rolled it into an inning-ending double play.

I think maybe they used the double relay because he saw they had time to execute it. The play would not have been close if he had made an accurate throw to home instead of to the 2nd cutoff man.

Can't be down after a great game on national TV. Southern Miss won because of 2 great plays usually not made in college baseball. The catch in center field would be a highlight on Sportscenter in any league. The double relay to the plate was probably a mental error by the cutoff man but then a perfect throw to the catcher. Losing the championship on their home field by a run was much better than our previous football scores games. I always read Walt's pre game summaries, but seeing the Southern Miss batters stats at the bottom of the screen was downright scary. Hard to believe all the games with them were one run affairs. Still think we can make some noise next week. CUSA was a much tougher conference than we anticipated.

Also, the 16 regional hosts will be announced by the NCAA tonight (Sunday) at about 7:30 p.m. (Central time). (The 8 national seeds will be announced Monday.)

I too agree with sending the runner in the bottom of the 9th: even though USM was playing inspired defense late in the game, the chance of them not making the play in that situation seems greater than the chance of Hunter getting the needed hit.
I only saw the late innings, but to me a telltale difference (I won't say decisive, but I think it's far to call it telling) is that in the 7th, our second baseman failed to move from 1st to 2nd on an errant pitch (and then we hit into an ending-inning double play) whereas in the 8th, their first baseman did move from 1st to 2nd on an errant pitch and then scored the go-ahead run on a single.

Hard to believe the difference was two wild pitches (and a couple very untimely double plays). Having said that, as sorry as I am to see The Streak end, it would have been highly unlikely we would have copped a regional host site regardless, as TCU has us beat in almost every resume category, not to mention the head-to-head.
Amador had his best effort in 6 weeks, and probably was left in one or two batters too long (not an uncommon occurrence for us). And Big Jon was back to his old self-- his stuff was electric. He just made two mistake pitches, both times when he was ahead in the count. And, not surprisingly, both times we walked the leadoff man today, that man scored.
Proud of the boys as they gave it their all. It's so much easier losing a well-played game as this one than those slugfest losses vs. LaTech.
So, do they send us to Lubbock, College Station or Baton Rouge?
Hopefully not CS or BR. Those two hosts are two of the hottest teams in the country right now.

I'm betting Lubbock, especially since we didn't face them this year.

RE: Rice vs USM - CUSA Championship game
I saw something after today's game that I was most proud of that I think shows the respect USM fans had/have for the Rice players/coaches.....as Rice was leaving the field headed to their bus, the USM fans who had gathered on the hill beside/behind the 1st base dugout gave each Rice player/coach an ovation as they walked through the large crowd with Wayne Graham getting probably the loudest ovation. In return respect the Rice players/coaches gave either a head nod, tip of the cap, or said "thank you" to the USM fans applauding them. 1st class all around by both parties.

Same to Rice....they could've walked with heads down or not said anything. The fact that the team gave a head nod, a tip of the cap and/or said "thank you" shows the class and dignity of how they carry themselves. Best of luck and hopefully we can have a repeat in Omaha.

Good luck to the Golden Eagles!
I thought you should have been awarded a host spot. You guys are definitely tough to beat at your place. Best of luck going forward.

Dead on there. Our players even said in the postgame that he's one of the best out there and they were just trying to make him work, get tired, and start leaving some pitches up that they could jump on.
Kid is phenomenal. His stuff lights out before he got tired. Our players looked like they were flailing at snakes with a garden hoe.
