Question about Jacksonville St. and SOCON
Anyone know the history behind why Jacksonville State has not been invited into the SOCON? They are an outlier in the OVC.Close to several SOCON schools and very near Samford. Samford keeping them out??

Apologize if this has been discussed before.

GO BUCS!!!

RE: Question about Jacksonville St. and SOCON
I would argue Samford is more of an outlier to the SoCon than JSU is to the OVC.

Besides, what purpose would it serve? What are the motivations for JSU to want to jump to the SoCon? It has been my understanding for years that they had their sights set on the Sun Belt, so moving to another FCS conference wouldn't really accomplish anything for them.

RE: Question about Jacksonville St. and SOCON
Travel expenses would be much less for JSU.Also they could be a travel partner with SAMFORD to save a little on travel for other SOCON members.

RE: Question about Jacksonville St. and SOCON
The SoCon's traditional foot print has been the Carolinas, Virginia, Tennessee, and south Georgia. Jacksonville State would be an interesting football addition if there was space, and would certainly bump the conference RPI up. I think they have higher aspirations however, namely going back into the Sun Belt at some point.

Has UNC-Asheville explored fielding a football team? That'd be a nice addition to the SoCon. Winthrop would also be nice.

Winthrop is currently conducting a feasibility study, but a cursory Google search suggests UNCA has never seriously considered football. I honestly doubt it would fly in that town, anyway.

I do agree that Winthrop would be a good fit for the SoCon if they give the green light for football, but I wouldn't consider them otherwise; football has been and should continue to be part of the SoCon's identity as a conference, and adding more non-football members weakens that identity. With that in mind, I would definitely consider JSU if they were interested in making the move, but I don't see them falling over themselves to leave the OVC where they rule the roost (no pun intended) in football, unless it's to go up to FBS.

RE: Question about Jacksonville St. and SOCON
Just my 2 cents on this topic.

If the conference were considering expanding (which they are not at the moment), JSU would get the same no vote as CCU would have, from all the privates and the two military schools, the lone exception would be Samford.

The reason they would vote no, is academics and the public vs. private ratio. It is currently 6 publics and 4 privates. However, these numbers are deceiving, as the two military schools will always side with the privates in matters of academics. The only way ETSU returned was as a package deal with Mercer and VMI.

I don't mean to put down ETSU, but without the gaping hole left by the departure of Elon, App, GSU, and CoC, ETSU probably would not have returned. The privates agreed because they got Mercer and VMI (both will vote with the privates).

IMO, if the SoCon were considering adding JUST one member (due to expansion or replacing one member), ETSU, WCU, UTC, nor UNCG would be voted in by the current membership.

I kind of agree on what you are saying. As someone posted on another thread, this would be an ideal conference:

App State
Chatt
Coastal Carolina
Eastern Ky
ETSU
Ga Southern
Ga State
James Madison
Jacksonville St
South Ala
Troy
Western Carolina

RE: Question about Jacksonville St. and SOCON
Yep, eventually it's time for the public schools to leave the private schools behind and the SoCon truly become the SmallCon. Let them have it and it be another A-Sun with football.

RE: Question about Jacksonville St. and SOCON
SoCon's privates would want nothing to do with JSU. Actually, Samfor wants nothing to do with JSU. Looking at it another way - why would JSU want to join the SoCon - not sure I see any significant reason to move. Revenue would likely be the same, tv exposure similar, travel not too different.

RE: Question about Jacksonville St. and SOCON
If you compute the mileage for JSU in OVC and SoCon, they are somewhat similar.

I was privy to a conversation the SoCon commish had concerning expansion. Apparently the football playing schools are quite happy with 9 schools who play football. That way you get 4 home and 4 road games each season. He said SoCon has no expansion ideas right now with regards to football.

He was asked about expansion adding non football schools. He did show some interest in that concept.

Which begs the question, which ones would make sense? How about Belmont and UNC-Asheville? That would be one private, one public.

RE: Question about Jacksonville St. and SOCON
Belmont is happy where they are. Travel budget has been cut in half compared to the A-Sun, and they won't move unless it's up or in a package with Lipscomb. Any combination of Lipscomb, Radford, Winthrop, Asheville would be great. If Upstate were better and had a better facility for basketball, I'd say they be great. Geography is perfect for them but after it just goes downhill.

RE: Question about Jacksonville St. and SOCON
SoCon needs to leave things as they are. None of the Big South or A-Sun schools bring anything significant to the table. Belmont is the only one that remotely makes sense and that's solely b/c the Nashville market MIGHT add a bit to the ESPN3 contract. But without football, that isn't happening either. SoCon has better tradition, overall programs, geographic footprint, and overall academics than either of those two conferences. Bigger is not better if the newbies are from either of those two leagues.

I second the idea of leaving the conference as it is.

RE: Question about Jacksonville St. and SOCON
I'd be fine with any that I mentioned, and would be even better with Belmont and Lipscomb together. Having a block of Nashville, Birmingham, and Chattanooga from a geography standpoint would be great. It'll never happen, nor will SoCon expansion without major moves being made. Well have to see what happens with the Big 12

RE: Question about Jacksonville St. and SOCON
there is no one out there that will add any TV/Media Rights value. Belmont does not , nor Winthrop, nor anyone else. Really no need for SoCon to expand. Focus should be on continuing to build rivalries and traditions among the newer and older members

Correct, there's also strength in numbers.
