1) We can upgrade both the payout and time slot for the Miami Bowl so that it becomes attractive enough to sign a P5 opponent. The best case scenario is to get it included in the same bowl pool as the Texas and Liberty Bowls (#3-#5 selections from a P5 conference).
2) Get a full time ACC commitment for the St Pete Bowl.
3) Get a full time tie to the Armed Forces Bowl
4) Get a tie in to the Indy Bowl (adds another P5 bowl).
5) Add the NOLA Bowl as a full time lower level Bowl in place of Hawaii/Bahamas slots.
New Line Up--
Miami-vs #3-5 P5
Military vs ACC #7
St Pete vs ACC
Birmingham vs SEC
Ft Worth vs B12/B10
Indy vs SEC
NOLA vs SB Champ
Boca vs CUSA
Not great, but at least all the bowls are in our footprint and 6 of 8 are against P5 opponents (7 of 9 in years where we win the access bowl slot). One of the remaining bowls is against a conference champ. That a pretty challenging post season for us.
Add four western schools, including Air Force, and affiliate with Army and BYU for bowls. This is what the expanded AAC could do:
#1 - Cotton/Peach/Fiesta vs NY6 [most years]*
Tier 1
#2/3 - Liberty vs #5 B12 OR #6-8 SEC
#2/3 - Las Vegas vs #5-6 PAC
Tier 2
#4/5/6/7 - Military vs ACC #7-9
#4/5/6/7 - St Pete vs ACC #7-9
#4/5/6/7 - Armed Forces vs B12 #7 OR B1G# 9-10
#4/5/6/7 - Birmingham vs SEC #9
Tier 3
#8/9 - Miami Beach/NOLA vs CUSA Champ
#8/9 - Poinsettia/Hawaii vs MWC #2 [CUSA backup]
Tier 4
#10/11/12 - NOLA/Miami Beach vs SB [CUSA backup]
#10/11/12 - Hawaii/Poinsettia vs MWC #3/4 [CUSA backup]
#10/11/12 - Boca vs CUSA/MAC [SB backup]
* BYU and Army ineligible for AAC's NY6 bid. Limitations to bowls during 6-year cycle. For instance, BYU in Las Vegas Bowl and Army in Military bowl no more than twice in 6 years.
7 bowls against P5 opponents from all P5 conferences.
Bowls called "Liberty" and "Military" and "Armed Forces" fit in perfectly with the AMERICAN brand and the three military academies. Also, nationwide bowl games from Maryland to Florida to Texas to California.
