Post'em, just because. Wear the colors, show the pride and it's still 99 days until Football.

Saw this one today:

Amanda C. Bryant-Friedrich, Dr. rer. Nat
-the new Grad Dean. Master from Duke. Went to Uni Heidleberg Germany, founded in 1386, to get a doctorate. That's just showin off.

Interests: Stuff with a lot of syllables and letters. Modified Nucleic Acids, Biomarkers, DNA and RNA damage, Photochemistry, Mass Spectrometry, Ionizing Radiation, Women in Science

hmm, as new Grad Dean, hope there's an interest in Males in Science too.

My interests are dogs, long walks on beaches and dancing naked in the rain. I need to upgrade.

I think men are quite well represented in the science fields.

Ok, my fault for jumping my own OT thread OT but it's still good and invited discussion.

So you're okay if the new Dean doesn't have interest in male students because they are "well represented?" Didn't think so. So what's your point here? I would hope all the new Deans and Provosts value individual merits over "group" merits. In order for University to meet its overall goals including diversity, I believe that the best path.

Those merits have always been there in "under-represented" groups. Once successful measures of merit are applied, not bias, diversity will hit its natural levels much sooner than by any forced action I think. Recruit the best, most competitive students, provide an excellent preparatory education and those "behind" because of non-accessibility issues (regardless the source), will catch up and represent. Make it too easy, give a preference based upon analytics, and you've helped create a failure. JMHO

Hey, the thread rewards. I thought you were joking (Jon Snow: Game of Thrones). Glad I googled before accusing.

Didn't know about him. Thanks!

wiki

did his undergraduate studies at Kenyon College (where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity) and the University of Toledo, from which he received a B.A. in 1962. He received a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Virginia in 1965. named a Distinguished Fellow by the Yale School of Management.

He MIGHT be smarter than you.

Too many smart people from Toledo to mention, but of course most of them are not well known so it wouldn't matter to give their names. So, of ones recognizable:

John Neff, highly successful mutual fund manager. I think UT has a department named after him now.

Also, Bill Gerstenmaier, head of Human Spaceflight at NASA.

I remembered Gerstenmaier but forgot the name. UT had a highly respected astronomy program at one time.

Great! Thanks. The idea of the thread, is to mention them.

We know the sports people. Who are the academics that put UT on the map? It does matter to give their names even more if it's NOT a well known name. It's of interest to me anyhow.

If it's someone that impresses you, working at UT or graduating from UT, please mention them. Please feel free to mention why you chose them. If it was a Professor meant a lot to you, mention. Thanks!

I discovered a callus on my toe!

Physics has a good rep. I'd like to take an astronomy or astro-physics course. Chem and Bio-Chem doing okay too. Headline in a recent duh'local that UT doesn't have anyone in the "prestigious" (cough, political) American Academy of Arts and Sciences Academy however there is this SMART person,

Danielle Samblanet
B.S. in Chemistry, 2013; University of Toledo
[Image: Danielle.JPG]

Who works for new UM inductee
[Image: melanie.jpg]

Probably researching how to get that growth on her boss' hand removed.

UT has the largest telescope east of the Mississippi River and is a partner in the Discovery Channel Telescope, A $53 million optical telescope in the mountains of Arizona.

RE: OT: Smart people at and from UofToledo
One thing I think not a lot of people know is that historically there have been a lot of engineers working at NASA with degrees from UT. This is because, in addition to those hired straight out of undergrad, in the 70s and 80s UT ran an on-site graduate degree program at (then) Lewis Research Center in Cleveland (now NASA Glenn). That program was discontinued in the early-mid 90s I think, due to government budget cuts, but a significant number of NASA employees got their Masters from UT during that period. Of course, as the years have passed since then, many have now retired, but it remains a nice legacy of UT's engineering program.

Both facts that I never knew or heard about before. Heard about the brown dwarf "planet" being discovered recently, but nothing about it being discovered by UT.

Went to campus today to poke around, go to that Rice Bowl restaurant. Walking in the Union, went by some undergrad research presentation thing going on, I peeked in. Never heard so many syllables spoken so quickly in a language I'm supposed to know. Had to leave, felt stupid. Even the young ones are smart. Supposedly there's some 10 year old taking college classes. Sheesh.
