I think its clear ODU has a lot of value. They have good fan support in FB/BB. They have the biggest budget among CUSA schools. They are in a state with only 2 other FBS programs in it, both at the P5 level. The school has a shot at building up like Boise State did within another decade. The question is will the AAC have an opening at any point, maybe not.

A move to the MAC for ODU might make some sense. The MAC has a much better TV deal, not just in money but in appearances. The MAC was rated the 10th highest conference in RPI last year and 8th in football. It's a better conference all the way around than CUSA.

The MAC from what I understand offered ODU, JMU and Delaware all at one point then ODU ended up with that great (at the time) offer from CUSA to play in a conference with East Carolina which was too much to pass up. CUSA could very well split in the next 2 years with ODU finding itself left behind depending on the configuration. The MAC would offer ODU stability and could bring another rival from CUSA East (Marshall, Charlotte, FAU, FIU) with you.

ODU would desperately need at least one regional team (Marshall, Charlotte, JMU) to make the move with them. Otherwise, they'd be on an island facing a direction where they don't get that many students or athletes.

Marshall is not a regional team and that wouldn't help us. Even Charlotte only helps a little.

But that's as good as it gets for possibilities, unless JMU moves up at long last. Nobody else in CUSA or the Sun Belt helps, outside maybe Appalachian State. Delaware isn't going anywhere. And that's about it.

JMU, ECU, Temple, and Navy help, looking at the G5.

UVA, UNC, NCSU, WF, Duke, VT, and MD ain't happening.

Then we might as well drop football now.

I don't know. I would think ECU would like a rival closer than Philadelphia. Temple could use someone closer too. ODU fits nicely right in the middle. You couldn't get much more different culturally than those two schools either, and ODU bridges that gap as well.

But they wouldn't join the MAC. The only way ECU and ODU are in the same conference is if a) ODU gets an AAC invite or b) the AAC dies and ECU doesn't get a P5 invite out of that.

Probably not, but this whole line of discussion stemmed from Kittonhead's comment that ODU might find life in the MAC more stable, particularly if another regional team came with. I said that it would be almost impossible without that regional partner, and somehow this turned into ECU and Navy and Temple.

I doubt ODU joins the MAC, but they will well before ECU, Temple or Navy football do.
