Note from the second article that ESPN will work with each school to ensure that school produced broadcasts are "up to ESPN standards" ... upon which they will transition to ESPN3.

"ESPN will send consultants to all 14 C-USA schools to, as one official said, "coach all of us up" on how bring their production levels up to ESPN standards. The schools will be expected to pay production costs.

As long as those production standards are met, ESPN will broadcast most or all of those games on ESPN3, sources said."

EDIT: Also note that the Baylor game will be a Friday night/ESPN broadcast.

The money may stink, but it sounds like the exposure will be much better.

ESPN3 >>> OwlVision

If we can get all baseball games on ESPN3, that would be great.

I wonder if J.P. will make the transition to the Worldwide Leader.

If you haven't checked out all the schools that do broadcast through ESPN3 you will be surprised. This would be great if it happens. Only what something like 15 years after TCU did their deal.

There really should be no excuse for Rice to have its production up to their standards almost immediately. We certainly have the money, and if we want to "move up" with the big boys we have to show it across the board in stuff like this.

The money per school in the deal is laughable compared to the seven and eight figures other schools are getting, but if more people are finally able to access the games and watch, then we better also give them an on-field product that is worth watching.

As to the Baylor game...if we get blown out again in front of a wider audience, that sets the program back again. We need to win that game or be within a touchdown to make it worth keeping things the way they are.

Does anyone know how high these costs would be ... how they compare to today's Owlvision's cost (and quality) ... and how willing the University is likely to make the financial and staffing committment needed for making stellar ESPN3 broadcasts? (I would hope that ours would be perceived as being the best in C-USA (and beyond).

Rice already has an excellent video news/feature report operation: https://www.youtube.com/user/RiceUniversity

Is there any student-experience aspect to those reports' production? And might additional student involvement be possible in making the Owls' live-event ESPN3 productions attain a similar level of broadcast quality?

I would think that we are already much closer to ESPN3 standards than many other conference members - although that is just is guess.

I do wonder if we will need upgraded camera quality/equipment.

Our current broadcast quality is abject garbage. Long way to go.
