Insurers cite rising drug costs and patients who utilize a lot of medical services for the price-hike requests, which range from 17 percent in New York, and more than 20 percent in Virginia, to 30 percent rate increase requests from Oregon's largest insurers.
Reducing risk of losses

One of the underlying reasons for the big requests has to do with the expiration of the reinsurance program under the Affordable Care Act, which had served to offset some of the losses due to sicker customers who racked up high medical bills.

The end of reinsurance in 2016 was written into the ACA because the law's backers had expected that the individual market on the exchanges would have stabilized by now. It hasn't, and enrollment has not met expectations because the plans haven't been able to attract as many young healthy enrollees as anticipated.

Heard on the radio yesterday that some bronze plans are going away which means a 700% increase for those folks when they more to a new plan.

I wish all the libs on this board would explain where that $2500 savings per family is that their Liar in Chief promised. Just one more lie from the biggest p.o.s. to ever live in the White House.

Don't forget these hikes are just the premiums. There are hidden hikes in increased deductibles and co-pays. The real cost is skyrocketing faster than any time in history. This is especially true for families moving to high deductible plans. If the value of the deductible is included as a hidden premium, then costs are going up faster than ever.

And it's not that people haven't been predicting these increases.

All I know is that during the Bush administration, my premiums went up 300%. I have not seen an increase in premiums since.
