gotta brag on my podcast for a minute
Forgive me for bragging, but now that we've announced this I've got to share it.

I've been co-hosting a Transformers podcast called TransMissions since 2013. Last year we started a Patreon where listeners could send us some money if they wanted. We've been able to use some of that money on things like microphones and hosting fees, but next month we're doing a pretty cool thing with it. We've commissioned a variant cover for an upcoming Transformers comic book.

It's based off this 80s Marvel Transformers cover:

I'm pretty excited about it and I don't know of any other podcast that has done this...definitely no other Transformers podcast has. We're selling it online and at a couple Transformers conventions coming up in the next few months.

I can't go into exact numbers but we had to buy 1000 books (at a 50% discount) and shipping of the books to us. On top of that we had to pay the artist and colorist. It wasn't cheap, but it was cheaper than we had thought it would be. We're selling the books for $10 and hope to make enough back to fund doing it again next year.

That's good enough, thanks. Always looking for guerilla marketing tips, that's a good one, just more than I would spend. Still, a crowd-funded marketing budget is intriguing.

the crowd funding didn't pay for 100% of all of the costs. It got us roughly 70% there and proved the concept was viable. We're getting around $150 every month from 27 people, and that's less than 5% of our listeners. Between the four of us on the show we put in the rest. We're going to reimburse ourselves what we put in once some books sell.

I wouldn't need as much cash, my publisher will do some marketing I'm just looking to supplement and blow it up. This is fascinating and I thank you for posting it. Also love comics, grew up on them, and although I write prose, there's a comic book element to my SF in the same way that John Ringo has one. Not the same genres, but second cousins.
