Service break! First set goes to Shaffer, 4-6.

Ip rallied from a 15-40 deficit to 40-40 ... but lost that point. The 5-9 Shaffer is hitting more winners and not as many mistakes as Ip's first two opponents.

Ip holds serve in 5 points. Up 4-2 in the 2nd set.

It's fascinating to watch Katherine's lobs and sliced returns entice her opponents into impatience and errors.

Ip holds serve to get to 5-3.

She was ahead 40-15, but two too-short lobs led to strong winners from Shaffer. But on the 40-40 point, Shaffer clanked her return of an Ip lob had landed near the end line.

Ip breaks to win the second set, 6-4!!

She was down 15-40, but Shaffer netted three straight deep-lob returns. On the set-winning point, Ip lobbed back Shaffer's second-serve!

Katherine holds service on the first game of the third set in just four points. Shaffer impatient and imprecise.

Shaffer breaks to take a 2-1 lead in the 3rd set.

It was an entertaining game, with one Shaffer winner on the corner line and several long rallies. In the decisive point, Ip was passed after a forehand return of a Shaffer drop shot.

Shaffer holds serve after a long rally at 40-30.

And so does Katherine, after Shaffer hit two service returns long and netted her smash of a very short lob.

2-3 in the 3rd set. Shaffer serving next.

Shaffer holds serve ... and then breaks Ip to take a 5-2 lead in the 3rd set.

Ip won the first two points -- Shaffer netted a short lob return and hit a ground stroke long. But Shaffer stormed back with a ground stroke on the left line, Ip double fault (net, then long), a smash after a fabulous get by Ip in the deep right corner and, finally, a long Ip ground stroke.

The final game was fast ... four quick points by an energized Shaffer. The final two points were a Shaffer drop-shot volley at the net and Ip's long service return.

Shaffer wins, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

What a great run by Katherine Ip, though. Congratulations!! #RFND.

Ip ip hooray for Katherine. She was a blue-chip recruit when she came to Rice, and I could see her being our firm #1 next year. You could easily make a case that Elizabeth Schmidt has been our most accomplished Rice coach over the past 4-5 years.

Agree about Schmidt though I still wonder what the issue was with the team's swoon in mid-year.

Austin captured the doubles title for Florida title with her teammate. In singles, the #2 seed from Virginia beat the #1 seed from North Carolina. On the men's side, a player from UCLA won both singles and doubles.
