Big West expansion
The Big West currently has nine full members:
UC Santa Barbara (founder)
UC Irvine
UC Riverside
UC Davis
CSU Long Beach (founder)
CSU Fullerton
CSU Cal Poly
CSU Northridge
Hawaii
And two affiliate members:
CSU Sacramento (beach volleyball, men's soccer)
CSU Bakersfield (beach volleyball)
With UCSD approving a student fee increase referendum for moving to DI, it would seem to be pretty easy to just add UC San Diego as the 10th full member, for now.
What say you?

RE: Big West expansion
Myself, if the BW was interested in going to 12, I'd like to see them add Sacramento and Bakersfield as full members.
No reason Sacramento couldn't get the same deal as Davis, in the Big Sky for FCS football affiliate membership. And it would give Davis a nice travel partner to N Calif for the rest of the BW.

Might be nice to see Cal. State-LA back where they belong. They were D1 programs, and in the same conference with the Big West schools. Azusa Pacific, Humboldt State and Dixie State may need to find a home in the future for football as well.

I live in CA and most of those folks never heard of USF. It's all relative.

RE: Big West expansion
I think UCSD is a given. They would not make a move unless they were talking to the Big West before.
I think that non-football conferences are best at 10 members. UCSD will be the only expansion. What I'm kind surprised is how much of an outlier UC-Davis is. Was there some sort of a plan to have Sac. St added before?
I could eventually see UC-Davis going elsewhere and the Big West pulling another CSU or UC school from the D2 ranks in the So Cal area.

If I was LB State and UCSB i'd look into merging the best of the Big West with the best of the WCC. Instead of two bad conferences you could make one decent one.
UCSB, LB St, Hawaii, Gonzaga, BYU, St. Mary's, Santa Clara, Pepperdine, New Mexico and whoever else they felt like would help them. Thats like a west coast A-10 right there.

Humboldt State, Chico State, East Bay State or Sonoma State are some schools in the northern parts.
Cal. State-LA used to be D1 with Fullerton State and them. If they stayed at D1, and not dropped football? They would have played in the Big West, and then the WAC. They might have been invited to the MWC over San Jose State.

The WCC likes its niche, and the long term stability that the conference has had is a solid indicator that its schools have no desire to move. Of course anything is possible, but this is very very unlikely.

Humboldt St is way out of the way and not an option. Same for Chico St.

All WCC schools have some sort of a religious affiliation and fit together. The are pretty much like the Big East for the west.

Sure they have, but the green and gold USF they know is the Dons of San Francisco.
Clearly the USF fan is no fan of A) quality academics or B) college baseball. UC Irvine, Santa Barbara, Davis and San Diego are all AAU schools and most of them play great baseball.

Well, now that the results are OFFICIALLY in that the UCSD referendum passes, the discussion hinges on if the Big West would expand past 10.

Why isn't Sacramento State already a full member of this conference? It seems like a much better fit for them.

RPI and raising the basketball profile are going to be the major criteria considered. New Mexico State and Grand Canyon accomplishes that. Sac State and Bakersfield, not so much.

RE: Big West expansion
They won't expand past 10. No worthy candidates;
1) CSU-Bako - rejected many times
2) Grand Canyon - no benefit in a long bus trip to a for-profit fake school
3) Sac State - they like the Big Sky, and don't want to be in an all CA league, and the agreement when UC-Davis and Cal Poly were added for Football was that the Big West would not take Sac State. If Sac State went to the Big Sky, leaving them with an unwieldy 11 members, the Big Sky will end affiliation for all CA schools.
ONLY way I could see ANY expansion is if a worthy DII school in CA also wanted to make a move.

Yeah, Sac State has hugely improved its branding and image in Calif. by playing in the Big Sky. Whoever made that decision was sold a bill of goods.

That is your opinion, which is irrelevant to them. They are happy being the only CA school in the Big Sky, and happy not being in a CA + one HI conference.
