Changing the conference bball tourneys
great interview by Ed Miller with Wood Selig about changing the CUSA tourney paradigm
http://pilotonline.com/sports/college/ol...01df9.html
I think another approach would be four on-campus pods (allowing all 14 schools to participate)
Pod #1 seeds 1, 8, 9
Pod #2 seeds 2, 7, 10
Pod #3 seeds 3, 6, 11, 14
Pod #4 seeds 4, 5, 12, 13
(much like a normal conf tourney with highest seeds playing lowest seeds, seeds 1 and 2 getting byes)
Pods would be played Tues/Wed (away from big boy tourney quarterfinals) then Friday and Saturday (to get on TV)

Add two schools so we are at 16 and can go to two "regionally friendly" 8 team divisions. Yes, each piece of pie gets smaller but the pie isn't that big to start with. There might even be a savings due to the overall reduction in travel cost throughout the season.
In basketball, have two separate divisional tournaments. The winner of each plays in the championship game of the home of the higher seed.
In football, play seven "in division games" and five OOC. Use that fifth game to the greatest advantage each program sees fit. Again, the winner of each division plays the championship at the home of the higher seeded team.
I don't know if the NCAA would allow this but I'm sure someone here does.

I don't think the NCAA would have any leg to stand on unless they created one specifically for this instance. There's no bylaw, near as I can tell, that forces inter-division play, and I don't think there's one that requires a set number of conference games based on conference size.
In fact, I believe that was the argument I saw put up on other boards for a conference going to 18 or 20 teams, then having the divisions function as de facto conferences until the postseason.

Marshall
Charlotte
Western Kentucky
Middle Tennessee
FIU
FAU
Some combination of UAB and up to two expansion teams
That would be a lot more workable in terms of travel than the current setup (men's soccer would still be a cross-country clusterf***, but that's the nature of the beast)

It would still be 1 bid. I'd rather have a 1 in 14 chance than a 1 in 20. And if a conference gets that big, you may as well expand to 64 teams and tell the NCAA and P5 to take a hike. Thats what its coming to anyway.
Though it might be fun to have the G5 have their own tournament of 16 teams with the winner getting a championship and a reserved spot in the elite 8 or something.

I think hybrid of Selig's suggestion and what's done now is what should be done. Move the tournament up one weekend (the same weekend as the CAA) and play Fri.-Sun. leaving two teams remaining. This portion of the tournament could be played at the higher seed of the previous season if they bid on the tournament. The remaining two teams play the following Saturday (same weekend as now) at the higher seed. TV should still be interested in both weekends.

I might actually travel to the tournament then. But with it starting on a Wednesday in its current format, basically requiring that I travel on a Tuesday and taking an entire week off of work., I doubt I'll ever go unless its in Norfolk...
