I once told a soldier "Thank you for your service" and he seemed embarrassed and uncomfortable.

Totally depends on the situation and the individual. I don't like that much attention so I might look the same way.

My father-in-law joined the Coast Guard to stay out of Vietnam.
I find it funnier than my wife does.

Well as it v turns out, my kids were playing with his kids at the playground. We go to talking and he told me about his time in Iraq. When it was time to leave, I thanked him and he was very embarrassed by it. It was totally not what I expected. I don't do that anymore.

My attitude is that I served my country long--and well--but I was also well taken care of in return. I got three college degrees--undergrad, Master's, and JD--paid for by taxpayers, the chance to see about 60 countries on 5 continents, some wonderful friendships that have lasted for years, great knowledge and experience, and now a retirement where I have many benefits (and would have been even better before Obamacare). So my response is to say, "You're welcome, and thank you taxpayers for taking such good care of me."

I'm proud to be a veteran of both the Air Force and Navy Reserve and I'll wear my Air Force cap because of that but I don't think I deserve any thanks. I was just doing what my other brothers did (family tradition). When someone tells me thanks, I just smile and say thanks. No biggie.
